About this file

This is an exhibit document from the Kentucky Historical Society outlining design guidelines and aesthetic standards for a museum exhibit titled "From Revolution to Statehood." The document establishes visual and thematic requirements for the exhibit's presentation, including artifact display principles, narrative approaches, color schemes, spatial balance, and accessibility standards. The exhibit design emphasizes artifact-centered displays with substantial negative space, juxtaposition of storytelling with historical facts, exploration of multiple historical interpretations, and vivid, playful color treatments intended to create photo opportunities throughout the space. Key design principles include vignette creation to establish thematic context, universal design accessibility standards without specialized adaptation, and balanced presentation of visual complexity to prevent visitor overwhelm.

The exhibit incorporates specific technical specifications for copy visibility based on viewing distances, ranging from 18-point minimum font for close viewing to 105-point minimum for distance viewing up to 25 feet away. The design framework prioritizes visitor engagement through examination of people, place, and context to foster empathy and connection to historical narratives. The document does not contain pricing information, funding details, contract terms, or procurement deadlines, serving instead as a design specification and aesthetic guidance document for exhibit development and implementation.

Text version

Hierarchy Major Theme This exhibit is thematic, and visitors should know and be reminded which major theme they’re exploring - when it starts and when it ends.

Object Artifacts are the center of attention, and the tone of their stories should be reflected in the graphic treatment. A considerable amount of negative space around objects should be used to draw focus.

Juxtaposition of Storytelling and Historical Facts The juxtaposition of storytelling and historical facts should be striking - ensuring visitors know what is being challenged and why. Data stories and other visuals -supporting objects, archival documents, etc - should be utilized whenever possible. Even if a visitor doesn’t read the label, they know what is being communicated.

People, Place, and Context For deeper learners; visitors can learn more about how these stories evolved by exploring the people telling them. Visitors should be able to relate to the humanity of these stories and feel empathy (when appropriate).

Data stories and other visuals - supporting objects, archival documents, etc - should be utilized whenever possible. Even if a visitor doesn’t read the label, they know what is being communicated.

Juxtaposition History Beside Itself Examine multiple interpretations of history, and the history of those interpretations. Explore the same subject through multiple lens.
