About this file
This document is an exhibit design guide titled "From Revolution to Statehood Look & Feel" prepared for the Kentucky Historical Society as Attachment J. The document outlines design specifications and visual guidelines for a historical exhibit focusing on Kentucky's transition from revolution to statehood, establishing a thematic hierarchy that prioritizes artifacts as focal points while incorporating storytelling elements that juxtapose historical facts with multiple interpretations of history through supporting objects, archival documents, and data visualizations.
The design framework emphasizes a modern, vivid, and playful color palette intended to create photo opportunities throughout the exhibit while maintaining universal design principles for accessibility. Key specifications include minimum text sizes ranging from 18pt to 105pt depending on viewing distance (1ft to 25ft), with exhibit elements designed to accommodate visitors of varying heights and abilities. The approach centers on creating vignettes that allow visitors to understand challenged historical narratives even without reading detailed labels, while providing deeper contextual layers about people, places, and the evolution of historical interpretations for more engaged learners who seek to connect with the humanity of the stories presented.

Hierarchy Major Theme This exhibit is thematic, and visitors should know and be reminded which major theme they’re exploring - when it starts and when it ends.
Object Artifacts are the center of attention, and the tone of their stories should be reflected in the graphic treatment. A considerable amount of negative space around objects should be used to draw focus.
Juxtaposition of Storytelling and Historical Facts The juxtaposition of storytelling and historical facts should be striking - ensuring visitors know what is being challenged and why. Data stories and other visuals -supporting objects, archival documents, etc - should be utilized whenever possible. Even if a visitor doesn’t read the label, they know what is being communicated.
People, Place, and Context For deeper learners; visitors can learn more about how these stories evolved by exploring the people telling them. Visitors should be able to relate to the humanity of these stories and feel empathy (when appropriate).

Juxtaposition History Beside Itself Examine multiple interpretations of history, and the history of those interpretations. Explore the same subject through multiple lens.
