Minimum Requirements and Specifications

Drilling and Coring Rig with Subsurface Testing Capabilities

Background:

We will conduct projects where we need to drill a range of different shallow boreholes for applications including monitoring well installation, soil sampling, and geophysical logging. To conduct these operations, we need to purchase a drilling rig capable of:

• High depth of penetration (50 ft or more) in a wide range of sediment types

• Compact frame that can fit between orchard tree rows

• Conducting a range of soil testing and extraction operations

Operational Specifications:

1. The system shall be operable by as few as two users with reasonable training, mechanical knowledge, and physical fitness.

2. The system shall have hollow-stem auguring and direct push drilling modes

3. Direct push rods shall be able to provide intact soil cores inside premade liners

4. Direct push capabilities shall use probing hammer with bi-directional rotation.

5. The rig shall have a field-removable power cell

6. The system shall be able to anchor to the ground

System Specifications:

1. The system shall not exceed 15,000 lbs and shall be able to be towed on a 2-axle trailer

2. The system shall be track-mounted and be able to independently maneuver into drilling position

3. The system shall be able to fit into relatively tight areas, so should not exceed six feet wide and the mast shall be able to fold to less than less than ten feet in height

4. The auguring system shall have a two-speed rotary head with at least 4000 ft-lbs of force on 4.5” outer-diameter hollow-stem augers

5. Direct push tooling shall be available with 2.25” outer-diameter rods with an inner diameter of no less than 1.5” to work with existing geophysical logging instrumentation, as well as 3.25” outer diameter rods

6. The 2.25” rods shall be compatible with 1.25” and 2.25” inner plastic liners for in-situ core extraction

7. Direct push tooling shall be able to reliably reach 50+ feet depth under favorable geological conditions

8. The system shall be capable of operating 4.5” outer-diameter solid-stem augers

9. The system shall come with:

• Rod racks

• Mountable toolbox

• Vise mount

• Hydraulic extruder for soil cores

• Yoke vise and mounting bracket
