About this file

The document is a technical environment specification from the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), detailing the current IT infrastructure and network configuration for state agencies. The technical environment overview includes comprehensive details about network, desktop, server, and communication systems, with specifications covering areas such as network connectivity, desktop computing, network services, database platforms, web environments, and directory services.

The MDT's current technical infrastructure consists of a Microsoft-based ecosystem with Windows 10 desktops, plans to upgrade to Windows 11, and an MPLS network connecting multiple locations across Montana. The network includes 1Gb connections to major cities, 200Mb and 100Mb connections to smaller locations, and various connection types for remote sites like weigh stations and construction trailers. The department utilizes Oracle 19c databases, SQL Server versions 2016-2019, Microsoft IIS 10 web servers, and a mix of Windows and Linux server environments, with Cisco networking equipment and F5 appliance protection. The infrastructure supports approximately 1,200 VPN-enabled endpoints and uses Active Directory for user authentication and authorization.
