About this file
This specification document outlines the requirements for utility truck bodies for the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), covering eight size classifications ranging from 1/2-ton to 1 1/2-ton vehicles with varying cab-to-axle (CA) configurations. The bodies shall be all-steel, low-profile, medium and heavy-duty units designed for highway maintenance applications with an expected service life of 10 or more years. Each utility body must feature a minimum of three compartments on each side with weather-tight hinged doors, adjustable shelving rated for 250 pounds per shelf, a steel tailgate, and fully welded construction using minimum 14-gauge galvanized or galvanneal steel. The specification includes detailed dimensional requirements with floor widths of 48 inches minimum and compartment heights ranging from 19 to 24 inches, with minimum weights varying from 750 pounds for 1/2-ton models to 1,400 pounds for 1 1/2-ton models. All units must include a complete lighting package meeting FMVSS and DOT requirements with pre-drilled mounting locations and plug-in adapters for Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, or Dodge chassis-cabs.
The contract requires bodies to be painted or powder-coated in gloss white with a minimum 2.5-mils thickness and warranted against paint defects for two years, with an overall 12-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship commencing from the in-service date. Bidders must submit complete illustrated catalog data sheets, detailed specifications, completed questionnaires, and any deviations from specifications on separate sheets. A pilot model body must be furnished and approved by the Department before manufacturing subsequent units, with rejection authority reserved if the Department's engineers determine the equipment unsatisfactory. Optional services include utility body installations as required during the contract term and primed bodies as alternatives to painted units. The specification requires undercoating with petroleum-based material, mounting hardware that does not require frame welding, complete installation kits, illustrated parts books, and installation instructions in CD format when available, with two additional copies provided to SCDOT's Director of Supply and Equipment upon initial delivery.
