About this file
This specification document from the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) outlines technical requirements for dump truck bodies in two primary categories: 1.5 cubic yard bodies and 5-10 cubic yard bodies (5, 8, and 10 cubic yard options). The specifications detail comprehensive construction standards for dump bodies designed for highway maintenance applications, including handling stone, dirt, asphalt, and snow removal operations. Bidders must provide complete dump body and hoist assemblies that are factory-assembled, tested, and ready for installation on SCDOT-furnished truck chassis. Key specifications include structural materials (AR450 steel for wear surfaces, Cor-Ten weathering steel for corrosion-resistant components with minimum Atmospheric Corrosion Index of 6.0), welded construction requirements, hydraulic hoist systems with minimum lifting capacities (Class 20 rating for 1.5 cubic yard bodies, Class 50-90 ratings for larger bodies), complete electrical and lighting packages meeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and South Carolina motor vehicle laws, and optional equipment including electric tarp systems and retractable access ladders. All units must include a 12-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, with warranty start dates based on the in-service date from SCDOT's Equipment Depot.
Bidders must submit illustrated catalog data sheets, complete questionnaires with detailed specifications, and clearly identify any deviations from the specifications. A pilot model must be furnished for departmental approval before production of subsequent units, with the contract subject to termination if the pilot model is found unacceptable. All components must be packaged per unit (no bulk packaging), painted gloss black with 100 percent surface abrasion to SP-10 finish, and include manufacturer's serial numbers permanently attached to each unit. The specification references approved equivalent manufacturers such as Godwin for hoist systems and Donovan Enterprises for tarp systems, with all manufacturers required to be active members of the National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) and listed on the current NTEA Dump Body & Conversion Hoist Chart. Service literature including illustrated parts books and installation manuals must be provided in CD format if available, with two additional copies submitted to SCDOT's Director of Supply and Equipment at the time of initial delivery.
