About this file
This document is an example Data Management Plan (DMP) template for federal grant projects. The template is designed for projects involving data collection, digitizing, processing, or other data transformations. It is provided as a reference example with additional templates available at the USGS data management plans website.
The template contains nine comprehensive sections that applicants must address: (1) use of existing data and current storage location; (2) collection or processing of new data and file formats; (3) access and use limitations, including proprietary or sensitive data elements; (4) public availability of existing data, including location, format options (CSV, Shapefile, GeoTIFF, or other), metadata availability, and associated fees; (5) plans for making new data publicly available with the same considerations; (6) backup procedures for all project data; (7) data lifespan options including indefinite maintenance, archive storage after a specified number of years, or destruction; (8) identification of proprietary or licensed software dependencies; and (9) quality assurance and quality control procedures for data collection and processing. This template serves as a standardized framework to ensure comprehensive data management planning across federal grant-funded research projects.
