About this file
This document is an attachment to a Request for Quotation (RFQ) for a Cryogenic X-Y-Z Positioner. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires a low-power, non-magnetic X-Y-Z positioning stage for use in a dilution refrigerator at 20 mK, with accurate position encoding, closed-loop control, and minimal heat dissipation. The positioner must meet specific performance requirements, including travel ranges, repeatability, load capacity, and power dissipation. It must also be compatible with NIST's existing control system and infrastructure. The RFQ specifies delivery within 32 weeks of award, and provides details on shipping, installation, inspection, and warranty requirements. Offerors must submit a firm fixed price quotation for the positioner, with an option for an additional unit. The acquisition will be conducted as a commercial item procurement under FAR Part 12, without using the formal source selection procedures of FAR Part 15.

Requirements / Specification Document
TITLE: Cryogenic x-y-z Positioner
Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:
Communications Technology Laboratory Radio Frequency Technology Division Radio Frequency Electronics Group, 672.03
General Statement of Need:
NIST needs a low-power X-Y-Z positioning stage for direct use at 20 mK in a dilution refrigerator with accurate position encoding and a closed-loop controller. The stages must be usable at 20 mK and result in minimal heating of the stage, reducing warmup and keeping the time to cool the temperature of the mixing stage back to 20 mK as short as possible. The materials must be non-magnetic as superconducting circuits sensitive to magnetic fields will be tested.
The current NIST Dilution Refrigerator is designed for positioning stacks comprised of two attocube ANPx341/RES+/LT/HV - linear x-nanopositioners and one attocube ANPz101/RES+/HL/LT/HV - linear z-nanopositioner OR the NP-450-X linear x-nanopositioners and the NP-240-Z linear z nanopositioner. To ensure that NIST does not incur additional costs over the purchase price, the vendor would need to provide for any mechanical adapters needed to fit their positioners into the already designed space in the dilution refrigerator, the electrical adapters needed to use the existing wiring currently installed in the NIST Dilution Refrigerator and be controllable using the existing NIST attocube and Renaissance controllers.
Current solutions are primarily based on piezoelectric positioners. The power P dissipated in piezoelectric positioners with a capacitance C and loss tangent tan(δ) driven by a sinusoidal signal with frequency f and RMS voltage V in the piezoelectric actuators is given by P = V2 f C tan(δ). If the positioners travel a step size ∆s during each cycle of the sinusoidal drive signal, the total time ∆t to move the positioners a distance d is given by ∆t = d/(f ∆s). Thus, the energy dissipation E required to move a distance d is E = P ∆t = P d/(f ∆s) = V2 C tan(δ) (d/∆s).
To reduce power dissipation at low temperatures to an acceptable level, NIST requires that the energy dissipated in the positioner per unit length of travel E/d = V2 C tan(δ) / ∆s be less than 40 mJ/mm at 4 K for a piezoelectric drive voltage V capable of exerting force of 100 g and drive speed of f ∆s > 0.1 mm/s.
In addition, the power dissipated at the positioner required to determine the position of each encoder must be less than 100 nW and the Z positioners used in the stage must be able to lift 100 g at cryogenic temperatures. Finally, the encoders and closed-loop positioning algorithm must be able to repeatably place each positioner within ±2 um.
Item Specifications and Quantities:
Item 1: Cryogenic x-y-z Positioner Quantity: 1 Specifications: 1.1 20 mm x and y travel range, 4 mm z travel range
1.2 Closed-loop positioning repeatability within ±2 um on all axes.
1.3 Non-magnetic materials.
1.4 Positioners and encoders designed to operate and meet
specifications to 10 mK and in high vacuum environment.
1.5 The energy dissipated in the positioner per unit length of travel
E/d = V2 C tan(δ) / ∆s is less than 40 mJ/mm at 4 K for a piezoelectric drive voltage V capable of exerting force of 100 g and drive speed of f ∆s > 0.1 mm/s.
1.6 The power required to determine the position of each encoder is less than 100 nW.
1.7 The Z positioners must be capable of lifting 100 g at cryogenic temperatures.
1.8 Positioners suitable for use in high-vacuum environment
without outgassing.
1.9 All screws, wiring and mounting hardware required.
1.10 The x-y-z positioner, possibly after being fitted with suitable mounting adapters supplied by the vendor, must fit into the existing NIST dilution refrigerator. This requires that the x-y-z positioner be a direct replacement for the current positioner stacks comprised of two attocube ANPx341/RES+/LT/HV -linear x-nanopositioners (see https://www.attocube.com/en/products/nanopositioners/low-temperature-nanopositioners/anpx341reslthv-linear-x-nanopositioner) and one attocube ANPz101/RES+/HL/LT/HV -linear z-nanopositioner (see https://www.attocube.com/en/products/nanopositioners/low-temperature-nanopositioners/anpz101reslthv-linear-z-nanopositioner). Thus, the x-y-z positioner stack must use the same screw pattern as the attocube stack to attach to the https://www.attocube.com/en/products/nanopositioners/low-temperature-nanopositioners/anpz101reslthv-linear-z-nanopositioner https://www.attocube.com/en/products/nanopositioners/low-temperature-nanopositioners/anpz101reslthv-linear-z-nanopositioner https://www.attocube.com/en/products/nanopositioners/low-temperature-nanopositioners/anpz101reslthv-linear-z-nanopositioner baseplate, occupy no more than a 45 mm x 45 mm footprint when centered in x and y. The top mounting surface of the z positioner must be horizontal, have the same screw patterns on the top of the z-nanopositioner as the attocube z positioner to attach items being manipulated, and must be the highest point of the positioner stack. Furthermore, when fully retracted, the x-y-z positioner must not be any higher than 51
mm. The dimensions and hole patterns of the attocube positioners can be found in the pdf files anpx341reslthv-linear-x-nanopositioner.pdf and anpz101reslthv-linear-z-nanopositioner.pdf after pressing the download button on the pages cited just above in this specification item.
1.11 The positioners must use existing NIST-owned controllers and wiring in our BlueFors dilution refrigerator. These include 1) the attocube ANC350/3/RES/Vac Piezo MotionController for closed loop control of up to 3 attocube positioners with /RES encoders AND 2) the Renaissance NP-Drive Slip-Stick Drive Controller (https://ren-sci.com/electronics#) and the Renaissance PREAMP-CAP-ALL Preamplifier for Encoded Stages. Either controller may be used. However, the electrical connectors on the x-y-z positioner, possibly after adding an electrical adapter supplied by the vendor, must be functionally identical to the corresponding electrical male PEEK connectors compatible with those used by attocube and Renaissance, which have part numbers 1021498 3-pin PEEK connector (solder point) and 1010784 ACC 5-Pin PEEK Connector (Soldering Point). These connectors have a 2 mm nominal pin spacing, a 0.47 mm nominal pin diameters and a 4 mm nominal pin lengths. There should be a two-wire differential drive line with a two-pin connector and a three-wire sense line with a three-pin connector for the sensor for each positioner in the x-y-z positioner stack. The drive and sense lines must be at least 28 cm long. If using the Renaissance PREAMP-CAP-ALL Preamplifier for Encoded Stages for position readout, cables of at least 28 cm long and adapters required to connect to female SMA ports in the cryostat driven by the Renaissance PREAMP- CAP-ALL Preamplifier must be provided with the positioners.
