About this file
This document is a detailed Scope of Work for exhibit enhancement project at a natural science museum, focusing specifically on wetland and coastal exhibit displays. The project involves comprehensive upgrades to seven distinct display areas, including the Coastal Dune area, Shallow Coastal Waters Aquariums, Interactive Rail for 2000 Gallon Aquarium, Marsh Aquarium, Wetlands Tower, Lower Wetland Display, Upper Wetland Display, and Beaver Lodge Display. Each section provides specific "Must Have" and "Nice to Have" requirements for interactive elements, signage updates, graphic redesigns, and visitor engagement improvements. The enhancements aim to create more educational, interactive, and visually appealing exhibits that highlight ecological themes related to Georgia's coastal and wetland environments.
The scope of work emphasizes design consistency, requiring new graphics to incorporate existing templates, fonts, and styles used throughout the exhibit hall. Specific design considerations include maintaining wheelchair accessibility, ensuring durability of interactive elements, preventing tampering, and using designated emblems and colors for wetland and coastal zones. The project requires careful attention to existing dimensions, lighting conditions, and interactive features, with a strong focus on creating engaging educational experiences that inform visitors about local ecosystems, wildlife, and environmental conservation. Attachment B – Scope of Work
Overall Wetland Exhibit Photos
1. Coastal Dune area Interactive Enhancements: Enhance interactivity in the coastal dune area through creative, durable & new exhibit installations that engage visitors with environmental themes.
➢ Must Have: Replace the three existing bump-out signs with interactive elements to display items that features pull-out drawers or lift-up lids.
➢ Must Have: Replace current backlit Duratrans graphics with updated visuals to match thematic content.
Themes for replacing three bump out signs:
• Sign #1: Beach/dune wildlife - Focus on local shorebirds and crabs, highlighting natural dune inhabitants.
• Sign #2: Sea turtle nesting - Highlight key aspects of sea turtle nesting
• Sign #3: Human recreation/impacts - Depict human use of the beach, highlighting the effects of recreational activities on the environment.
➢ Design Considerations:
• Ensure sufficient space between the dune interactive area and nearby aquariums to allow wheelchair access. All touchable objects should be firmly secured to prevent removal.
• Consider protective coverings, such as lexan or plexiglass, for durability and safety.
• Existing Dimensions: Graphic sign size 20.5”X9”. Sign with frame 24” X 12”.
• Replaced interactive elements should be approximately the size of the current bump-out signs.
• The dune area behind is hollow and can be accessed through the current bump-out signs with an opening of space is 10”X16”.
2. Shallow Coastal Waters Aquariums Enhancements: Enhance the shallow coastal waters aquarium with engaging thematic features and updated graphics.
➢ Must Have: Remove and replace all the three interpretive messaging signages around the shallow coastal aquariums. These graphics shall compliment the aquarium theme. Themes for updating graphics:
• “Where Do People Fit In?” – Two panels addressing human issues and model behavior: recreation, food, trash.
• “Animals in the Shallow Coastal Waters” – One panel highlighting species found in shallow coastal waters.
➢ Nice to Have: Design & install a pseudo (3-D representation) dock/pier above the aquariums featuring details like a person fishing (painted or sculptural), or a fishing line collection tube. A taxidermied or model shorebird or pelican could be placed on the dock, along with barnacle detailing on the posts.
➢ Design Considerations:
• Three updated signages shall be sized approximately 24” x 18”.
• By other contractor, the aquarium tanks are being redesigned to appear as a single continuous tank, while still functioning as two separate tanks. The animals & theme will be on Georgia’s shallow coastal waters.
• The pseudo pier to be approximately 8’ tall located above the new graphics and must extend a minimum of 8’-8” to fully span and cover both aquariums.
• Ensure any pier addition avoids casting shadows over the tanks to maintain visibility. Necessary
Lighting to be added if shadow cast from pier above.
3. Interactive Rail for 2000 Gallon Aquarium: Develop an interactive rail with tactile elements to enhance visitor engagement.
➢ Must Have: Design & install an interactive rail feature with interpretive signage, preferably with flip-up signs that add a tactile element to the exhibit. Shall additionally include mounting items such as shells or beach debris on the coastal aquarium wall behind the rail to further enhance the interactive experience.
Theme Ideas for interactive rail signs:
• The marine biodiversity within Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.
• Highlight biodiversity of oceanic species and their ecosystems.
• Highlight why maintaining clean water is essential for marine life and human health.
➢ Design Considerations:
• Installation Surface: The wall under the aquarium and floor are both concrete.
• Avoid loose items or sharp objects that could damage aquarium glass.
• The new interactive rail shall not be less than 9½ feet long, can extend longer if necessary.
4. Marsh aquarium Signage update: Update signage to focus on the ecological importance of Georgia’s marshes.
➢ Must Have: Remove and replace the “Adaptations” signage to focus on Georgia’s marshes, highlighting their ecological importance. Themes for updating signage:
• Georgia’s Marshes – Showcase the role of marshes as critical nurseries for ocean species and emphasize the large marshland areas in Georgia compared to other regions, explaining their role in storm resilience. Define “brackish” and its importance to the marsh ecosystem.
➢ Nice to Have: A “smell jar” feature shall be added, to replicate the scent of a marsh, offering an immersive sensory experience for visitors. (Design template for smell jar shall be provided by Owner)
➢ Design Considerations:
• The marsh exhibit is adjacent to a hallway door for staff use, so features should not protrude far from the wall.
• The current size of the Adaptations graphic is 40” x 24”. The updated signage shall match or closely align with this size.
Overall Wetland Exhibit Photos
5. Wetlands Tower Display Enhancements: Enhance the tower’s appeal and provide engaging educational content about wetlands.
➢ Must Have: Tower - side 1: The small window beneath the TV screen shall feature a model of a crayfish burrow for added engagement, with adjacent signage providing interpretive information about the burrow. If additional space is required for the new signage, the existing plaque shall be relocated to a future designated location.
➢ Must Have: Tower - side 2: Update the graphic signage of “What is a wetland?” by incorporating relatable comparisons, such as sponges, filters, etc.
➢ Design Considerations:
• Graphic size - What is wetland? is approximately 46”X 22”. Ensure the updated graphic preserves the functionality of the door, which needs to remain operational and lockable.
• Electricity is accessible within the tower to support digital displays.
6. Lower Wetland Display Enhancements: Improve the interactivity and educational value of the Lower
Wetland area by updating interpretive features and adding interactive elements.
➢ Must Have: Remove the leftmost ID book and replace it with a changeable sign holder for animal identification.
➢ Nice to Have: Retain the rightmost one, and update its content to focus on species and elements found in Sandy Creek’s wetlands.
➢ Must Have: Remove and replace the existing wandering water sign into a touchable, interactive display.
Themes for new interactive display: Animal track station.
➢ Must Have: Update the "Secrets of the Soil" signage with a clear and easily readable design with similar theme. Avoid backlit signs, as they can be difficult to read.
➢ Design Considerations:
• Current ID book dimension is 22” x 12”.
• Current Secrets of soils inlaid sign is 15 ½” X 10”
• Current Wandering water sign irregular opening measures approximately 22”x9” and can be accessed from underneath the shelf.
• Current Exhibits are on concrete overhang/shelf so there is space underneath. New signage to be inset into the opening under the rock edging of the concrete shelf.
• Ensure new installations do not block views of the aquarium.
• All touchable elements must be securely fastened to prevent removal or tampering.
7. Upper Wetland Display Enhancements: Improve the interactivity, durability, and readability of the Upper
Wetland display through updated signage and interactive elements.

Theme for replaced flip book shall be water quality or macro invertebrates.
➢ Design Considerations:
• Replace the existing backlit signs, as they are difficult to read, with updated versions.
• The wild water web graphic is currently inlaid in the rock, opens below and measures approximately
21.5” x 10.”
7. Beaver Lodge Display Enhancements: Improve signage and prevent tampering with the display, while making the area more engaging and informative.
➢ Must Have: Provide a solution to prevent children from climbing into the beaver lodge, pulling up beaver models, or removing sticks.
➢ Must Have: Replace the existing backlit Beaver Basics sign, which is hard to read, with a clearer and more visible design. Themes for signage: Beavers: Nature’s Engineers, highlighting how beavers improve habitats and their role as nature’s builders.
➢ Design Considerations:
• The sign is inlaid inside the beaver lodge, where lighting is limited and measures approximately 15
½” x 10”.
• The new "Beaver Basics" signage shall include backlighting or an integrated light source to ensure visibility.
Sign Templates, Fonts, and Styles
The design must incorporate the existing templates, fonts, and styles used in other areas of the exhibit hall to ensure consistency. Electronic files for these graphic elements will be provided for reference and integration into the new graphics.
Utilize the emblems and colors designated for the wetland and coastal areas (as shown in the pic below), which are currently featured on the entry wall highlighting all exhibit hall zones. These shall be incorporated into the new graphics for both wetland and coastal exhibits to maintain thematic consistency.
Some of the graphics used in other parts of the exhibit hall have action items. These are broken down into 3 categories: Try this at home, Get involved, and Go outside. The design shall incorporate graphics & formatting as shown in below pictures, in order to include these action items in the new graphics.
