NIST SPHERE

Integrating Sphere-based UV Chamber

Chin et al, Review of Scientific Instruments (2004), 75, 4951.

Martin and Chin, U.S. Patent 6626053

Simulated Photodegradation via High Energy Radiant Exposure

• 2 m integrating sphere

• 8400 W UV (6 lamps)

• 95% exposure uniformity

• Visible and infrared radiation removed

• 32 individually controlled environmental chambers o Temperature and relative humidity around specimens precisely controlled o Capability for mechanical loading

• A high through-put weathering device

*Commercial weathering device – only operate one chamber at one condition at one time.

Tasks:

Assemble and construct environmental chambers

(electrical control and mechanical components: a pair of blue box -no engineering involved) for the

NIST 0.5m Sphere. NIST require assembly of the components (some supplied but most need to be purchased) for six environmental chambers. Design is completed and drawings and parts list will be provided to the Contractor.

Statement of the Work (SoW)

6-Port SPHERE (0.5m) Upon delivery Modifications for operation

• 0.5 m integrating sphere

• 1680 W UV (2 lamps)

• 95% exposure uniformity

• 6 individually controlled environmental chambers

• 5x higher irradiance than that of 2 m in low UV range

Design/build chambers utilizing commercially available components as much as possible

6-Port SPHERE – ready for weathering marketplace

Environmental Sample Chamber

Control (Electrical/Electronics) Box

Control Box

NIST provides:

1. Part list and wiring/connection diagram

2. Watlow F4T controllers with pre-design control program(image)

3. MFC (C44) – 2 for each box

Environmental Chamber

NIST provides:

1. Part list and wiring/ hoses connection diagram

2. T &RH sensor boards 2 for each box

3. Sample holder housing back cover

4. Pave connectors (12)

5. Water level seniors (12)

Required spec, and evaluation criteria:

Matched pair can run @ 50°C/ 50% RH - Show data log @ 50°C/ 50% RH -24hr
