Bureau of Land Management

Billings Field Office

POMPEYS PILLAR NATIONAL MONUMENT HISTORIC INSCRIPTION RESEARCH

YELLOWSTONE COUNTY

STATEMENT OF WORK

I. Introduction and Background

Pompeys Pillar National Monument (PPNM) is located on the south bank of the Yellowstone River and falls within the 1/2-mile corridor of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Not only does the Monument fall within the trail corridor, the 1806 signature left by William Clark is the only physical evidence of the passage of the Lewis and Clark expedition visible anywhere. The Pillar also contains evidence of over eleven thousand years of human occupation plus hundreds of historic inscriptions.

Before and after Clark’s passage, hundreds of individuals left their mark on the Pillar. Some information about these individuals is known, more could be revealed via historic research.

The Bureau of Land Management’s Billings Field Office (BIFO) is seeking historic research on the signatures appearing on the Pillar. In 2001, the BLM contracted Minot State University (MSU) to provide baseline documentation of the signatures and rock art at PPNM. The material is detailed and extensive. This material, and more, would be provided to the selected consultant.
