STATEMENT OF NEED – Absolute and Relative Gravity Meters
National Geodetic Survey
1. Introduction/Background: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is congressionally mandated to define, maintain, and provide access to the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS). Gravity data is a key component of the NSRS and terrestrial (measurements on the surface of the earth) gravity data is an important component. NGS requires the capability to measure terrestrial gravity continuously and accurately to support the NSRS. The need is demonstrated through a couple of current projects, including Gravity for the Redefinition of the American Vertical Datum (GRAV-D) and the Geoid Monitoring Service (GeMS) projects
First, it is important for the GRAV-D project to provide a high quality picture of the gravity field to support the modernization of the U.S. vertical datum. The goal of the GRAV-D project is to collect airborne gravity data to support a 1 centimeter geoid where possible. For each airborne gravity survey, an absolute gravity tie at the airport must be established. This involves measuring with an absolute gravimeter, which is, in turn, tied back to a known value of gravity at the Table Mountain Geophysical Observatory near Boulder, Colorado. The gravity signal at this site must be continually monitored to account for signals including barometric pressure, luni-solar tidal effects, and local hydrology.
Second, terrestrial gravity measurements support various other projects and surveys. An example is the Geoid Monitoring Servcie (GeMS) project which started in 2020 and is looking to expand in 2023 and outlying years. GeMS requires episodic revisits and remeasurements of absolute gravity at predetermined locations to allow NOAA to monitor changes in the gravity field over time. Additionally, the ability to temporarily deploy a continuous relative gravity meter in remote locations (e.g. a glacial valley in Alaska, an uplift zone along the Great Lakes, or a subsidence zone in southern Louisiana) allows us to monitor signals that are highly localized.
In order to provide NGS the ability to efficiently collect high quality terrestrial gravity data, NOAA is interested in purchasing a Micro-g LaCoste A10 field absolute gravity meter that will measure gravity to a high degree of accuracy, be robust in the field, and easy to deploy to locations throughout the US and its territories. NOAA is also interested in purchasing 3 instruments from the next generation of spring-based gravimeters, the Micro-g LaCoste gPhoneX. These allow for both high precision observations, as well as having low power consumption, low operating costs, and high portability (for remote deployment).
