Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge

Statement of Work for Pine Creek Dike Rehabilitation

SCOPE: This Statement of Work defines the work required to rehabilitate the Pine Creek Dike, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) area. The dike length is approximately 1720 feet (fence length includes along the dike, around the end, and back (approx. 3450 feet). Dike is 21 feet wide.

This part of rehabilitation of Pine Creek Dike requires vendor to provide materials and install muskrat preventative fencing.

Materials provided by contractor:

Wood or metal fence post Tennis court fencing or equivalent Fasteners (staples for wood, wire for metal posts) Pre-approved cover crop seed mix

Materials provided by USFWS:

Native seed mix

Installation:

1. Trench 5 feet down and place fencing along both edges of dike

2. Support fences with wood (2”x4”) and fencing staples until back filled

3. Back fill covering fencing

4. Disturbed areas (approximately 1 acre) will be seeded as soon as construction is finished using a mix provided by US Fish and Wildlife Service. A pre-approved temporary cover crop mix, provided by the contractor (i.e. winter wheat at a rate of 1.5 BU/acre ) will be used if seed dates are out of prescription for permanent seedings. If a cover crop is sown, the contractor is responsible for implementing the permanent seeding at the first appropriate seeding window (see example plan attached for seeding windows).

Best Management Practices:

The contractor will work with the Refuge Manager to determine Best Management Practices (BMPs).

A site visit is recommended for this project. An example plan has been included for reference to show placement of fencing within a dike. This is for reference only and is not configured to the Pine Creek Dike site. Fencing for this project will occur on both sides of the dike.
