About this file
This is a salient characteristics specification document for hospital patient beds being sought by the VA Veterans Health Administration Network 22. The document outlines detailed technical requirements for hospital beds, including both standard and bariatric versions.
Key specifications include: variable height capabilities (10" minimum for CLC beds, 11" for bariatric beds), 5" under-bed clearance for lifts, push/pull force requirements (4 lbs unloaded, 12 lbs with 500 lb capacity), bariatric bed weight capacity of 1,060 lbs, high-precision scale system (0.5-1% accuracy), 3-level smart bed exit alarm system, automated communication systems, retractable footboard connectors, tool-less bed extenders (80"/84"/90" adjustments), width requirements of 35-47 inches, FDA ISO60601-2-52 compliance, USB connectivity, non-boosting backrest system, floor-clearing side rails with safety indicators and lockout features, and full warranty coverage with preventative maintenance training if no service agreement is purchased.

Salient physical, functional, and/or performance characteristics:
Hospital Patient Beds
1. The bed must be capable of being lowered to variable heights to minimize falls and ensure patient safety.
2. The beds must be at or below the following heights for the following areas:
· 10’’ low height on CLC
· 11’’ low height on Bariatric bed.
3. The beds must be capable of having a 5” under-bed clearance for providing access to lifts and over-bed tables, even at the lowest height for Safe Patient Handling.
4. The beds must have significantly less push/pull force.
5. The push/pull force must be no more than 4 lbs. to move the bed without a load and no more than 12 lbs. of push/pull force with at least 500 lb. weight capacity.
6. The needed bariatric beds must specifically have a weight limit of at least 1,060 lb. weight capacity and must include a foot extender.
7. The beds must have a high precision scale that provides an accuracy of between .5%, and 1% for bariatric patients. The Load Cells for these beds must be located above the bed’s casters for increased accuracy.
8. The bed Scale must be able to be “zeroed” in any position and have the capabilities to add the weight of any added weight of equipment being used, without the patient being moved or repositioned.
9. Any integrated smart bed exit system must have 3 levels of sensitivity alarms. This system must have a system that has the capability for a log to be created.
10. The communication systems to both the staff and the patient must be able to automatically turn on when the patient gets out of bed and turn off when the patient is back in bed.
11. The communication systems must have controls with a smart screen at the footboard to facilitate ease of use for caregivers.
12. The connectors within the foot of the bed must have retractable (spring-loaded) footboard connectors to prevent damage to electrical contacts caused by obstruction during footboard installation.
13. The Foot of the bed extenders must be able to be installed and exchanged with less than 5 lbs. of push/pull force. The bed extenders must be able to accommodate up to the following adjustments and must be “Tool-less”:
· Adjustments of 80’’/84’’/90’’.
· Adjustments of 84’’ to 88’’ for bariatric version.
14. The bed must have technology that allows customer patient positioning to include the following dimensions: minimum and maximum width, between 35 and 47 inches and accommodates up to a 48-patient surface and must be within full compliance to FDA ISO60601-2-52 (Seven zones of Safety & Entrapment).
15. The bed must have no or very limited gaps between the headboard and side rails, eliminating the entrapment zones.
16. The information system must be able to connect with a patient safety message system and must be able to receive customizable personalized information about both patient and staff members alike.
17. The USB system must be located on the side of the bed for easy access for the patient.
18. The Bed system must have technology that incorporates a non-boosting backrest system, that will reduce patient sliding/shearing during bed backrest activation and minimize the need to reposition the patient in the bed.
19. The bed must have side rails that never touch the floor even at the lowest height, which maximizes infection control.
20. The bed must have a color-coded safety status indicator, to indicate if the side rails are in the safe and locked position.
21. The side rails must also have a “lockout” feature to keep the patient from accidentally releasing the rails.
22. Must include an industry-level or better warranty on all parts and labor.
23. If there is no preventative maintenance service agreement included or purchased, then the manufacturer must be able to at no charge to the Government provide any necessary preventive maintenance training and responsibilities for the facility's Mechanical Shop for all scenarios that may void the warranty if not properly maintained.
