About this file
This document is an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a Ventilated Modular Wet Cleaning Bench. UT-Battelle is seeking responses from interested firms to provide a unit that will be delivered to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in support of a DOE-funded research and development program. The scope of work includes design, fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing, storage, and delivery. An RFP is expected to be issued in Spring 2025 for one unit, with work to begin shortly after contract award. The current expected delivery is March 2026, and the award will be a single, competitive fixed-price contract. The Ventilated Modular Wet Cleaning Bench is described as a fume hood-type enclosure with a draining work surface, allowing workers to safely use solvents, acids, and tools to clean parts and equipment. Key specifications include minimum interior workspace dimensions, work surface height, and chemical resistance requirements. Interested firms should provide contact information for further correspondence.

Ventilated Modular Wet Cleaning Bench - EOI
Ventilated Modular Wet Cleaning Bench
Expression of Interest Overview
UT-Battelle (the company) is seeking an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a Ventilated Modular Wet Cleaning Bench. The unit will be delivered to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in support of a DOE funded research and development program. The scope of work includes design for manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing, storage (as needed) and delivery.
The Ventilated Modular Wet Cleaning Bench Request for Proposal (RFP) is expected to be issued in Spring 2025 for one (1) unit with work to begin soon after contract award. The required delivery schedule will be finalized at the time of purchase order award. However, the current expected delivery is March 2026. The award will be a single, competitive fixed price contract. All interested firms should provide contact information (Name, Email and contact number) for further correspondence as part of their response.
Disclaimer: This EOI neither constitutes a solicitation, Request for Proposal (RFP), Invitation for Bid, or promise to issue an RFP in the future, nor does it restrict UT-Battelle to an ultimate acquisition approach. This EOI is issued solely for information and planning purposes and should not be construed as a commitment of any kind. EOI submission is not required to be considered for inclusion on the invitation to bid at a later date.
SCOPE – The Ventilated Modular Wet Cleaning Bench is envisioned to resemble an instructional-type fume hood with sashes on multiple sides (minimum of two and up to all four sides), a work surface with a grate suitable for cleaning heavy items, a drain pan for collecting rinse water in a 5 gallon carboy(s), cabinets with doors, lights, 120V 60 Hz electrical outlets, compressed air/gas outlets, process water fixture(s), and overhead exhaust connection(s). The sashes on each of the front and rear of the unit will be split into two vertical sash sections which are independently adjustable in the vertical direction and each of these vertical sashes will have horizontally adjustable sash panels. The preliminary design also includes vertical sashes on each of the two sides of the unit which may also have horizontally adjustable sash panels. It is anticipated that two or more personnel may be required to work at the unit simultaneously to perform the cleaning process on long parts.
The Ventilated Modular Wet Cleaning Bench consists of three major individual components called the Ventilated Work Enclosure, the Work Surface and the Base Cabinet(s) that will all be integrated into a single unit. These major components will be modular with independent structures but must be designed together to ensure mechanical and electrical integrity of the system. The resulting combination will provide a fume hood type enclosure with a draining work surface in which the worker safely uses solvents, acids, compressed air rotary tools, etc. to clean parts and equipment requiring aggressive cleaning methods while venting harmful exhaust fumes through the facility exhaust system.
The Ventilated Work Enclosure consists of split combination sashes, exhaust duct connections, baffles, electrical outlets, lighting, etc. Sashes shall be counterbalanced or otherwise constructed to provide ease of positioning of the sashes in the vertical direction. Integrated light fixtures with On/Off switches outside the Work Enclosure will illuminate the work area to aid the worker cleaning parts and equipment inside the enclosure. Duplex power outlets (120V 60Hz) at each end of the Work Enclosure will provide power for auxiliary equipment. A ventilation flow alarm will be integrated into the unit to provide the user indication of low flow velocity conditions. The Work Surface consists of a bar-grate with drain pan or similar construction surface which will support the equipment while also allowing liquid rinse water to drain away from the equipment and worker. The work surface must be resistant to acids and solvents and meet a flame spread of less than 25. Liquid wash is provided by two integrally plumbed hand sprayers (one on each end of the unit) with rinse water to be provided by the facility process water system via ½ inch nominal tubing. The liquid rinse water is collected under the Ventilated Work Enclosure work surface (grate) by the drain pan and channels via 1.5-inch nom drain line to a 5-gallon carboy(s). The Base Cabinet is designated as a Chemical (Acid) Storage cabinet and shall be constructed of a minimum of two and up to four individual cabinet sections and shall have bays with swinging doors of not over 30 inches wide to enclose the volume under the work surface. The Base Cabinet(s) shall be connected to the facility exhaust system via a connection to the work volume ventilated enclosure and shall have electrical ground points.
Figure 1 below depicts the conceptual design of a Ventilated Modular Wet Cleaning Bench, Base Cabinet Doors are not shown.
