Exams Mobile User Guide Preparation
1. Purpose: Prepare your Android tablet for testing – do not skip any steps!
2. Tasks:
a. Make sure you are using an Android 11 or later tablet (it will not work on phones).
b. Save any Data Files that you wish to keep:
i. Prepare Data File for Database Loader (preferred method): Creates a .txt file in your Downloads folder that you can then move to your C:\Data Transfer – Prep from Tablet folder (create it if you have not yet).
ii. Back up Exams Database: Creates a SQLite.db file in your Downloads folder that you can then move to your C:\Data Transfer – Backup DBs folder (create it if you haven’t yet). However, due to the differences in the SQLite databases between the testing and the current, production version of Exams Mobile, it may not be possible to use the backup as more than a reference of the past information. It would not be advised to continue collecting data under that old SQLite database. For this reason, do not use backups created from pre-release versions of Exams Mobile for data collection.
c. Uninstall any previous version of Exams Mobile on your tablet:
i. Tap and hold on the Exams Mobile icon.
ii. Uninstall
d. Download and Install Exams Mobile:
i. Open Google Play on your Android tablet
ii. Search for “FSVeg Exams Mobile”
iii. Select the FSVeg Exams Mobile item
1. If you were a beta tester for Exams Mobile, the page that opens will be labelled “(Beta)” – that is just because you are listed as a beta tester in Google Play. However, the download is still the production version.
2. If you want that label to be removed, scroll down to the “You’re a beta tester” paragraph and select “Leave.” The next time you visit this page the beta designation will be removed. You can always reinstate yourself as a beta tester for Exams Mobile in the future if needed.
iv. Install and Open
0. Screen Copy (scrcpy) – Helps in communicating what is happening on your tablet if you have questions or encounter bugs:
On your PC, follow the instructions in Appendix 1, Screen Mirroring with scrcpy, at the end of this document. You will use it to “mirror” your Android tablet display to your PC’s screen, at which point you can get a screen capture, show your tablet screen live in Teams, etc.
Overview
1. Exams Mobile has three primary functional areas:
a. Setup: Create and configure Personal Templates that will save time and effort while reducing errors collecting data.
b. Setting Data Collection: Create a Data File from a Personal Template and use it to collect Common Stand Exam (CSE) or Inventory and Monitoring (IM) data according to your unit’s current practices.
c. Data Transfer (Tools): Enables the passing of data between an Android Tablet and a PC. Once data are on a PC, you can log into FSVeg to access the forms that enable data transfer between the PC and the FSVeg database.
Setup Purpose: Create and configure Personal Templates that will save time and effort while reducing errors when collecting data.
1. Select a Regional Template.
2. Save it as a Personal Template.
3. Customize your Personal Template – set it up to meet the Common Stand Exam data collection needs on your unit:
a. User Definitions:
i. Define Lists of Values (LOVs) for data, such as Project Name, Location, etc.
ii. Identify values that will populate fields whenever you create a new Setting (i.e., stand exam) record.
iii. Important points:
1. Set Defaults for the following in this order only – do not skip around, since the values are hierarchical:
a. Admin Region
b. Admin Forest
c. Proclaimed Region
d. Proclaimed Forest Setting the defaults correctly ensures that the Tree Species and Veg Species LOVs are populated appropriately for your unit.
Species of Mgt Interest: This list is for the entire region; however, not all species in this list are valid for your forest.
You must turn off the ones that are not on your forest by doing the following unusual steps in this order:
a. Species of Mgt Interest: Set Use It? = No for all species.
b. Tree Species:
i. Set Use It? = No, for all species
ii. Set Use It? = Yes, for all species
c. Veg Species:
iii. Set Use It? = No, for all species
iv. Set Use It? = Yes, for all species At this point, if you revisit Species of Mgt Interest, you will notice that some are set to Yes while others are set to No. The ones set to No should not be used on your forest, since they would prevent you from loading your data.
We do this is to enable only the species of management interest that occur on your Forest:
Exception: You do not need to do the above steps where the source Regional Template’s Species of Mgt Interest LOV is blank (e.g., Region 1 Templates). In those cases, you only need to add Species of Mgt Interest records, making sure that they are valid species on your forest – that is, they appear in either the Tree or Veg species lists.
2. Certain fields cannot be used on the Data Collection forms unless you provide the LOVs for them:
a. Stratum
b. Setting User Field (these are already provided for R8 and R9(
c. Plot User Field
d. Tree User Field
e. Veg User Field
3. Please be aware that what is preloaded in the Regional Templates for PV References A, B, C, and D are just a subset of what is available to you on your forest. Typically, there are several more options that you can select, so do not feel limited to what is initially shown in these PV Ref attributes.
For instance, the Region 4 Template is preloaded with the following PV References:
a. 418 Curlleaf Mountain Mahogany Habitat Types etc.
b. 420 Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands etc.
c. 501 Riparian Community Type Classifications for Humboldt-Toiyabe
d. 502 Westside Mixed Conifer Ecosystems for Plumas, Lassen, and Tahoe NFs However, there are many more PV references available for Region 4:
iv. Known Issues:
1. Tree Species – Initial focus is halfway down LOV list instead of at the top. Select another attribute then Tree Species attribute to correct.
2. Veg Species – Initial focus is halfway down LOV list instead of at the top. Select another attribute then Veg Species attribute to correct.
3. Tree and Veg Species – Changing selections in one personal template or data file changes species selections in all personal templates and data files.
4. EV and PV Codes – Open each list to populate it; otherwise, the LOV on the setting or plot form may be empty.
b. Field Selections: Where you select:
i. Which fields appear on each form (Setting, Plot, Tree, Veg Comp, Downed Woody). Enables you to display only the fields you use.
ii. Whether fields are required. The crew cannot leave a form unless the required fields are collected. The exception to this is the tree form – the following fields, when designated as required, are required only for:
1. Site Trees:
a. Height
b. Age
2. GST trees:
a. Height
b. Age
c. Growth (radial or height, as appropriate for tree size).
3. DBH species:
a. DBH, where tall enough to have a DBH (greater than 4.5 feet).
b. Height, for trees less than 4.5 feet.
4. DRC species, where designated:
a. DRC for all such species
iii. Known issues:
1. All forms: Duplicate (Dup) – Values are not duplicated.
2. Tree Intensive, Extensive, Quick:
a. Check GST Tally – The check to identify which tree records could be selected as GST or is the largest is not functional.
b. Witness Tree / Navigation under the IM protocol – The ability to identify witness trees or plot navigation is not functional.
c. Default Sample Design: Where you configure the sample design needed for the typical stand exam on your unit. Notice that:
i. Each subpopulation definition is separated by a thick horizontal line. When a subpopulation requires two or more criteria, such as diameter and height, they are grouped together and bordered by a thick line above and a thick line below.
ii. The Subpopulation Numbers are unique for each subpopulation, and there is no overlap in these IDs across the tree, veg comp, downed woody, and surface cover subpopulations.
Other available tools:
a. Planned Plot Calculator – Enter an estimated Coefficient of Variation (CV) and desired Sampling Error to compute the number of plots that could be installed to achieve that Sampling Error at the 68% Confidence Interval. However, remember that in general, a plot density of 1 plot per 10 acres is sufficient for the purposes of stand exams.
b. Tree Audit Check – Your Region may have parameters that could aid in determining whether your tree measurements (typically, diameter, height, growth, and age) are within normal bounds – or you may create some for yourself if not provided in the Regional template. They are species-specific, and the way they work when you are collecting tree data is:
iii. If a tree’s measurement exceeds the tolerance limits specified in this matrix, a warning message will appear that identifies what measurement is suspect.
iv. You can retain that measurement if you wish, but you also have the option to immediately edit it if you think you made a mistake.
v. The three columns, C1, C2, and C3 are special in that they are used to identify the height equation and compute an expected height as follows:
1. If only C1 has a value, then the expected height is found using the linear function:
Expected height = 4.5 + (C1 * DBH)
2. If C1 and C2 have values, but not C3, then the expected height is found using the Wyckoff equation:
Expected height = 4.5 + exp(C1 + C2/(DBH + 1.0))
3. If C1, C2, and C3 all have values, then the expected height is found using the Curtis-Arney equation:
Expected height = Expected height = 4.5 + C1 * exp(-C2*(DBH ^ C3))
vi. Similarly, the expected age is found using Years to DBH + (A1 * DBH), then used with the Age Tolerance % to identify whether a tree’s age is suspect.
vii. Bear in mind that this form’s performance is slow, and it may look as if nothing is happening for a while. We are improving that, but in the meantime, please be patient with it.
d. Growth Sample Tree (GST) Guidelines – These are the recommendations for the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) that would provide the best information to calibrate Cycle 1 growth for your stand, should you desire to have it. But please know that, due to the time and cost of meeting these guidelines for a stand, they are often not implemented fully as shown, depending on the purposes of the stand exam. As stated in the CSE User Guide:
The objective of the GST guidelines is to obtain an unbiased and representative sample of trees for species of interest across the stand so that FVS growth modelling for both small and large trees can be “calibrated,” or modified, to be closer to the growth that was observed. The best results for a particular species are obtained when a range of size classes in both small and large trees is collected, which is why the above matrix is provided. Also, at least five GST trees in each size category (small or large) must be sampled for calibration to occur; any fewer would mean that growth would not be calibrated for that species in that category.
The minimum GST collection guideline in the CSE protocol (two large and two small trees for up to two species per plot) is designed to achieve this for most stands. However, in small stands involving few plots or in stands with multiple species, it may be necessary to select more than that.
It is not necessary to designate GST trees for species in which you are not interested. For example, you may have a multiple-species stand that includes, for example, Gambel oak and your analysis is not particularly concerned with nor would be affected by it, so it is ok not to sample it for growth.
Similarly, it is ok to emphasize to your field crews to be sure to collect species of interest, such as Douglas-fir.
e. Fire Info/Observations – Should you need to associate a stand exam with a particular fire and its observations, that information can be entered here, and it will be loaded into FSVeg for this purpose. Please know that a record for that fire must first be entered into FSVeg before these observations can be entered.
Setting Data Collection
1. Purpose:
a. Create a Data File from your Personal Template (created and customized in Setup, above)
b. Use it to collect Common Stand Exam (CSE) or Inventory and Monitoring (IM) data according to your current practices.
2. Once your Personal Template is ready, create your Data File using Save As:
a. Navigate back to the main menu (you can easily access this from anywhere in the app with the “Home” button in the upper right corner).
b. Your Personal Template should still be in the “Select a Template or a Data File” box.
c. Save As to save it as a Data File:
i. Give it a name.
ii. Set File Type to Data File.
iii. Set Protocol Type to either CSE or IM.
3. You will notice that the Setting Data Collection icon is now active. Use it to begin the data collection process:
a. When you first open this form, it will be empty (later, once you begin saving settings, it will be populated with the last setting you worked on). Start entering your first setting’s data by selecting the Add Setting button.
b. Notice that all your default values will appear in the fields you chose to display (through Setup > Field Selections). These defaults will help speed data entry in two ways:
i. You do not have to worry about typos.
ii. They will automatically populate the fields you chose, so you are spared having to enter the same stuff repeatedly for every setting you create.
iii. From the Setting form, you have access to that setting’s data; the hierarchy is as follows:
1. Setting
a. Sample Design
b. Plot
i. Tree
ii. Veg Comp and Surface Cover
iii. Downed Woody
iv. Plot History
v. Witness Tree / Navigation (IM protocol only) – not operational yet.
c. Setting Damages
d. Species of Management Interest
iv. Options button
1. Plot form:
a. Change Plot #
b. Slope-Adjusted Plot Radius
2. Veg Comp / Surface Cover and Downed Woody forms:
a. View Sample Design
3. On the Tree form, Options gives you access to several useful tools:
4. Change Tag ID: Particularly useful when merging separate plots of one stand exam that were collected by two or more crews – especially when one considers that the Merge tool will not automatically re-number plots.
5. Slope-Adjusted Plot Radius: Fixed-area plot radius (in horizontal distance and slope distance) is computed from the inverse of the plot size and the slope.
6. In|Out Tree Form: Enter the diameter, the slope distance from the pin to the face at DBH, and the slope (also from the pin to the face at DBH) to determine if the tree is in or out. Notice that it uses the BAF from the sample design and will also provide a limiting distance and limiting slope distance. If the tree is in, the diameter will be automatically placed in the tree form. This consistently gets voted as the “Coolest Thing since the Relaskop” at FSVeg/CSE classes.
7. Multi-Stem DRC/DBH Calculator: Enter the diameters of the individual stems of a multi-stemmed tree to quickly compute its effective DRC.
8. Tree Damage Form: Access a tree’s damages either from the Damage field (click in the D field, then select Form) or you can choose this option.
9. View GST Guidelines: A quick way of reviewing them.
10. View Sample Design: View the subpopulations and how they are defined.
11. Apply Field Selections: Suppose you made it all the way to the first plot when you suddenly realize that you made an epic mistake with your field selections when setting things up, such as forgetting to include an important field. You can fix this situation by doing this:
a. Enter required fields for the data you have collected so far (or the form won’t let you leave)
b. Return to the Main Menu.
c. Setup > Field Selections: Reconfigure as needed.
d. Return to the form you left to complete the repair with Apply Field Selections.
c. On the Tree form:
i. Add Tree Record adds a new tree record just below the active line. This differs from the other forms that put the new record at the bottom, regardless of which line is active. It will also automatically renumber the trees. The reason for this difference is to make it easy for the field crews to insert a tree that they missed.
Data Transfer Tools
(Note: You will create the highlighted C:\ drive folders as described on the next page) File Management
· On both your PC and your Android tablet are manual, for the most part:
· On your PC, create these folders on your C:\ drive:
· When used, the Exams Mobile Data Transfer Tools in Oracle will create these folders on your C:\ drive:
· On your tablet, files created by the Exams Mobile application are placed in your Downloads folder. You can set up your own folders in Downloads to help you organize your files according to the type of file and their purpose (backups, imports, prep for loading), like the above folders.

1. Make changes directly in the form. This is OK for minor changes, but if you need to make significant changes, you might consider making them on your tablet in Exams Mobile, then downloading the corrected Data File to your PC.
2. Save them with Save Staging Data Changes
These tools assist in loading data into FSVeg:
2. Preload Check – Performs a quick check on the data prior to loading, the most important of which is to ensure that all tree records are matched to one and only one subpopulation described in Sample Designs. The text file produced is stored on your C:\ drive:
3. Data Report – Produces a text file that enables you to easily look at your data and, if needed, print it out. The text file produced is stored on your C:\ drive:
4. Load Selected Data File Into FSVeg Database – Loads the selected data into FSVeg.
a. If any settings already exist in FSVeg, (i.e., same setting id, measurement date, purpose code, and exam levels), then you will have the option to either overwrite the existing data or decline to load the setting .
b. Settings with problems will not be loaded and you will be informed of them.
c. You will be notified when loading is complete.
d. FSVeg Spatial implications: As always, if the location is checked out, you won’t be able to load data into it.
Additional Tools:
5. Merge Data Files – Merges data files and settings.
6. Import From FSVeg – Populates the Staging Data with settings from FSVeg. Use this if you want to put a setting from FSVeg onto your tablet.
7. Delete My Staging Data – Used to clear the Staging Data if you wish to start over with a blank slate.
Sharing Data Files with Backup/Replace Exams Database
Exams Mobile stores the Regional Templates, Personal Templates, and Data Files in a SQLite database (internally labelled, “FSVeg_Exams_DB”).
To share this SQLite database:
1. Back up Exams Database
2. Rename it or accept the default (includes a date and time stamp). Its suffix will always be “.db”
3. The backup will be stored in your Android tablet’s Downloads folder.
4. Connect your tablet to your PC.
5. On your PC:
a. Open 2 Windows File Explorer windows for:
i. Your Android tablet: navigate to the Downloads folder.
ii. Your C:\ drive navigate to C:\Data Transfer – Backup DBs
b. Drag-and-drop the backup.db file from Downloads to C:\Data Transfer – Backup DBs
c. The SQLite database is now available for you to transfer via email, jump drive, T:\ drive, etc.
To use a SQLite database that someone has made available to you:
1. On your PC, save it to your C:\Data Transfer – Backup DBs folder
2. Connect your Android tablet to your PC
3. On your PC:
a. Open 2 Windows File Explorer windows for:
ii. Your Android tablet: navigate to the Downloads folder.
iii. Your C:\ drive navigate to C:\Data Transfer – Backup DBs
b. Drag-and-drop the backup.db file from C:\Data Transfer – Backup DBs to Downloads
4. In Exams Mobile on your Android tablet:
a. Replace Exams Database
b. Select the backup .db file from Downloads
c. You have the option to save the existing SQLite database as a .db file, since it will be replaced by the incoming database.
d. The incoming SQLite database is now available for your use.
5. Known issue: When changing Field Selections on such data, the user is not always prompted to Apply Field Selections if they differ from what is in the Setup > Field Selections.
Importing Data Files from FSVeg
If needed, you can pull Common Stand Exam data from FSVeg, move it to your Android tablet, and open it in Exams Mobile. There are some considerations:
1. Common Stand Exam data stored in FSVeg is no longer associated with the Setup (User Definitions, Field Selections, and Default Sample Design) information under which it was collected, so all this information will instead be supplied by the configuration of whatever Regional Template, Personal Template, or Data File that you have selected at the time you tap on the Import From FSVeg icon in Exams Mobile on the tablet:
2. As a result, it is advised to select a Template or Data File whose configuration is as close as possible to the one under which the data was collected, especially in terms of the admin and proclaimed units, since the forest-specific species lists would be appropriate for the incoming data:
a. Admin Region
b. Admin Forest
c. Proclaimed Region
d. Proclaimed Forest But you might also consider having the other LOVs populated if the incoming data used them. Otherwise, their values may be flagged as incorrect since they would not exist in User Definitions. Examples include:
a. EV Ref and Codes
b. PV Ref and Codes
c. User Fields for Setting, Plot, Tree, Veg d
3. The imported file will be saved in Exams Mobile as a Data File named NewCSEData.cse. It is advised that you edit this generic name to something that is meaningful and distinctive, however.
4. The imported data can be treated as any other Data File in terms of viewing, editing, etc.
5. Known issue: When changing Field Selections on Imported Data from FSVeg, the user is not always prompted to Apply Field Selections if they differ from what is in the Setup > Field Selections.
Distribute Personal Template to Your Crew or Contractors There are two approaches to distributing configured files to your crews: You can send them either (a) your Personal Template – with which they will create their own data file – or (b) your pre-survey Data File containing the settings on which they will collect stand exams. The approach you choose will depend on the experience of your crew or contractors and the amount of guidance they may require.
a) First Approach Build your Personal Template:
1. Select Regional Template; save as your Personal Template
2. Setup
a. User Definitions

Appendix 1. Screen Mirroring with scrcpy
Failure to do this will yield errors later (see above).
1. Android tablet – configuration changes:
a. Settings > About tablet > Software Information
i. Build number: Tap 7 times to enable Developer Options
ii. Look under Settings; Developer Options should now appear towards the bottom.
b. Settings > Developer Options
i. USB debugging à on
2. PC:
a. Download the latest version of scrcpy:
i. Create a C:\scrcpy folder
ii. https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy/releases
iii. Scroll down to Assets
1. scrcpy-win64-v[whatever the latest version is].zip – download this to your C:\scrcpy folder
iv. Navigate to C:\scrcpy and unzip it there. Make sure that:
1. All the unzipped content is under C:\scrcpy
2. There is not an additional scrcpy folder below this (i.e., do not create or populate a C:\scrcpy\scrcpy folder), or it won’t work.
b. Edit System Environment variables (enables you to run scrcpy from anywhere in a command window, regardless of the default directory – otherwise, you have to cd (change directory) over to wherever it's filed every time you want to run it)
i. In the "Type here to search" window (lower left corner of your desktop), type "Edit environment variables" and tap the Enter key.
ii. The Environment Variables window will appear.
1. In the User variables window, select Path
2. Edit… button: opens the Edit environmental variable window:
a. New button
b. A new record is inserted ready for you to type the new path. Enter this: C:\scrcpy
c. OK – to close the New Environment Variables window.
3. OK – to close System Properties
c. Run scrcpy – from here on, you can just do the following to run scrcpy.
i. Turn on tablet
ii. Connect tablet to one of the PC’s USB-a ports (it won’t work right otherwise)
1. On the tablet – message will pop up: Allow access to tablet data? Allow
iii. Command window (enter cmd into the "Type here to search" box
iv. At the command prompt, just type scrcpy – your tablet's screen should pop up on your desktop.
v. Keep the Command window open – if you close it, your tablet will stop being mirrored, so just minimize it.Or set up a shortcut on Taskbar or Desktop:
vi. Open Windows File Explorer
vii. Go to C:scrcpy folder
viii. Right click on scrcpy.exe
ix. Select Pin to Start or Pin to Taskbar.
Click on the scrcpy icon to start program.
Two windows will open:
1. A command window displaying the status of scrcpy activity in preparation to run. If correctly installed, it will be followed by the opening of the mirrored tablet screen a few seconds later. You can minimize this command window, but do not close it, since doing so will close scrcpy and you would have to re-start it.
If there was a problem with the installation, there may be some indication of it in the content of this command window.
If the connection between the tablet and the PC is bad, the command window will close without opening the mirrored tablet screen. If this happens:
a. Check your connections
b. Try a different USB port on the PC

Troubleshooting scrcpy:
1. The cable must be plugged into one of the PC’s USB-A ports, or scrcpy won’t work.
2. If (1) the scrcpy window briefly displays but then closes and (2) the PC’s Windows File Explorer shows the tablet’s files, this may be a connection issue. Unplug the cord from the tablet and the PC and then reconnect, and try firing up scrcpy.
3. After establishing a successful connection, you may make updates to the Android tablet’s Downloads folder contents that are not shown in Windows File Explorer, such as Exams Mobile file additions when you prepare a file for database loading. When this happens, unplug the cable from the PC, then plug it back in and re-open Windows File Explorer.
4. If this window appears when you try to start up scrcpy, it means that you need to apply the Android Tablet – Configuration Changes listed at the beginning of this scrcpy appendix item:
5. You fire up scrcpy but nothing happens other than the command window pops up but doesn’t’ seem to be able to find the tablet. Check on the tablet that you have responded to the Allow to the Allow access to tablet data popup message 2024 05 22 Exams Mobile User Guide Page 2 of 2 image1.png image2.png image3.png image4.png image5.png image6.png image7.png image8.png image9.png image10.png image11.png image12.png image13.png image14.png image15.png image16.png image17.png image18.png image19.png image20.png image21.png image22.png image23.png image24.png image25.png
