About this file
This document provides equipment descriptions and specifications for a federal solicitation seeking vessel charter services in the Bering and Chukchi Seas. Key details include descriptions of the CTD sensors and water sampling equipment to be used, with dimensions up to 4.5 feet by 4.5 feet by 6.25 feet and a maximum weight of 1,600 pounds including water samples. Plankton nets and oceanographic winches are also specified, along with diagrams of mooring systems and an example deck loading configuration for mooring recovery. The related solicitation seeks vessel charter services in Alaska waters, as described in solicitation number 1305M321QNRMA0011 issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Department of Commerce. Specified equipment will be used to conduct ocean data collection and mooring recovery operations.

The exact CTD to be used has not been identified. CTD consists of conductivity, temperature, and depth sensors and water sampling bottles connected to large metal frame. The dimension listed in the project instructions is 4.5 feet long by 4.5 feet wide (or 4.5 feet in diameter) by 6.25 feet high would be the largest one that would be used. The weight of the CTD without water is less than 500 pounds. The water sampling bottles to be used could collect as much as 20 liters each and could have as many as 24 bottles. The additional weight added by the water could be as much as 1,100 pounds. Below is a photo of what a typical CTD looks like.
Below is a schematic for the plankton nets to be used (also called the bongo), and photographs of the nets attached and deployment from a ship.

Below is a photo of the oceanographic winch that may be used. The two winches are identical.
Length 83inches x Width 55inches x Height 60inches, 480V three‐phase, Weight is approximately 5,000lbs.
There are bolt holes on the base of the winch. The winch could either be bolted or welded into place or a combination of the two.
