About this file

This is a technical specification document (Section 055005 - Metal Fabrications) for the Department of State's Bandar Maintenance Facilities project, specifically detailing requirements for metal fabrications related to Forced Entry (FE) and Ballistic Resistant (BR) security assemblies. The document outlines specifications for miscellaneous steel plates, framing, trim, bearing plates, lintels, and anchor bolts used in security doors and windows.

The specification requires delegated design by a qualified professional engineer and details performance requirements including structural standards, thermal movement allowances, and material specifications such as steel plates (ASTM A36/A36M), stainless steel (Type 304 or 316L), and galvanized steel components. Key quality assurance requirements include fabricator qualifications with minimum 5 years experience, AWS welding standards compliance, and specific galvanizing requirements. The document connects to a broader solicitation (19BX6025Q0007) for FE/BR doors and windows package for the U.S. Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan, requiring DOS standards compliance and DS/PSP/PSD approval.

FABRICATION, GENERAL

Shop Assembly: Preassemble items in the shop to greatest extent possible. Disassemble units only as necessary for shipping and handling limitations. Use connections that maintain structural value of joined pieces. Clearly mark units for reassembly and coordinated installation.

Cut, drill, and punch metals cleanly and accurately. Remove burrs and ease edges to a radius of approximately 1 mm unless otherwise indicated. Remove sharp or rough areas on exposed surfaces.

Form bent-metal corners to smallest radius possible without causing grain separation or otherwise impairing work.

Form exposed work with accurate angles and surfaces and straight edges.

Weld corners and seams continuously to comply with AWS recommendations and the following:

Use materials and methods that minimize distortion and develop strength and corrosion resistance of base metals.

Obtain fusion without undercut or overlap.

Remove welding flux immediately.

At exposed connections, finish exposed welds and surfaces smooth and blended so no roughness shows after finishing[ and contour of welded surface matches that of adjacent surface].

Form exposed connections with hairline joints, flush and smooth, using concealed fasteners or welds where possible. Where exposed fasteners are required, use Phillips flat-head (countersunk) fasteners unless otherwise indicated. Locate joints where least conspicuous.

Fabricate seams and other connections that are exposed to weather in a manner to exclude water. Provide weep holes where water may accumulate.

Cut, reinforce, drill, and tap metal fabrications as indicated to receive finish hardware, screws, and similar items.

Provide for anchorage of type indicated; coordinate with supporting structure. Space anchoring devices to secure metal fabrications rigidly in place and to support indicated loads.

Where units are indicated to be cast into concrete or built into masonry, equip with integrally welded steel strap anchors, 3.2 by 38 mm, with a minimum 150-mm embedment and 50-mm hook, not less than 200 mm from ends and corners of units and 600 mm o.c., unless otherwise indicated.

Galvanized Steel:

Fabricate items in accordance with Class [I] [II] [III] guidelines as described in AGA's Recommended Details for Galvanized Structures.

Use fabrication practices for products in accordance with applicable portions of ASTM A143, A384 and A385, except as specified herein. Avoid fabrication techniques which could cause distortion or embrittlement of steel.

Consult Project Director/COR regarding potential warpage problems or potential handling problems during the galvanizing process which may require modification of design before fabrication proceeds.

Remove welding slag and burrs prior to delivery for galvanizing.

Provide vent and drain holes and/or lifting lugs to facilitate handling during the galvanizing process that are suitable to Project Director/COR and fabricator.

Locate holes so they will not be visible on exposed surfaces. If this is not possible, plug holes with zinc solder after galvanizing and file smooth. Do not fill holes indicated to remain as weep holes.

Remove lifting lugs after galvanizing.

After galvanizing, fill holes that were required for the galvanizing process.

Remove, by blast cleaning or other methods, surface contaminants and coatings which would not be removable by normal chemical cleaning process in galvanizing operation.
