Maternity Flight Duty Uniform (MFDU) Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP)

Statement of Work (SOW)

1.0 Introduction

This Statement of Work (SOW) defines the requirements for the contractor to produce and deliver 2,000 Maternity Flight Duty Uniforms (MFDU) Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP) uniforms in accordance with (IAW) the provided government requirements. The MFDU is defined as a one-piece flight suit.

2.0 Background

The MFDU was developed by the Air Force Uniform Office (AFUO) at Wright Patterson

Air Force Base (WPAFB) in Dayton, Ohio. There has been a policy change to accommodate ability to fly and to be outfitted through the entire duration of pregnancy.

Currently, flight duty uniforms (FDU) do not exist for pregnant aircrew members. At this time to compensate for the need, pregnant aircrew members are modifying their own flight suits to accommodate their changing figures or are seeking out larger flight suits to fit their growing bellies which creates safety concerns. The unsanctioned modification of flight equipment, such as an FDU, negates all safe-to-fly and flame-resistant classifications sanctioned by the development source. The scavenging of larger sized flight suits brings about fitment issues elsewhere on the body, creating excess in the chest, arms, legs that lead to additional safety of flight conditions. The creation of a Maternity Flight Duty

Uniform (MFDU) will relieve significant safety concerns pregnant aircrew members experience while performing flight duties by eliminating the need to make modifications to the current flight suit. The overall goals of this effort are to, eliminate the fitment issues with the current flight suit, destigmatize pregnancy in the aviation workforce, and prevent pregnant female aircrew from being grounded for the entirety of their pregnancy.
