A. VENTPLY OR BASEPLY: Apply one 18 inch width Ventply or Baseply at low edge of perimeter. Apply following plies in full widths, lapping each ply 2 inches. Install fasteners at perimeters, corners, and in the field, using the minimum number of fasteners per square as required by FM approval guide for I-90 wind classification.
B. FIRST ASPHALT PLIES: Using glass plies, apply a 9 inch wide piece, then over that, an 18 inch wide piece, then over that, a 27 inch wide piece. Over these three partial sheets, install a full width 36 inch piece. The following felts are to be applied full width, overlapping the preceding felts by 27½ inches so that a least four plies of felt cover the substrate at all locations.
Set each ply firmly and uniformly, without voids, into hot asphalt (within ±25ºF of the EVT) applied just before the felt at a normal rate of 23 pounds per square. Installation over roof insulation may require up to 33 pounds of hot asphalt per square.
C. AGGREGATE: Set aggregate into hot asphalt mopped on at a nominal rate of 60 pounds per square. Aggregate must be installed so that there is complete coverage across the entire surface and at least 50% of the aggregate is solidly adhered in the hot asphalt. Do not apply the aggregate when the wind chill factor is less than 60ºF. Provide accurate, clearly visible thermometers at kettles and at a shaded job site location.
D. CONFORMANCE WITH APPLICABLE CODES AND INSTRUCTIONS: Apply in conformance with applicable portions of the IBC Chapter 15, NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual, and in conformance with roofing manufacturer’s printed application specifications for indicated conditions. A minimum of one cut shall be taken per building. Test cuts shall be taken before application of visually inspected on the job site by the inspector and then removed for delivery to a testing laboratory. If test cuts do not meet manufacturer’s specifications, the entire roof shall be removed and replaced at Contractor’s expense.
Coat the area from which the test cut has been taken evenly, bottom and sides with plastic roof cement. Cut roofing plies to fit and set in alternate plies and plastic cement to fill the cut-out flush with the surrounding roofing.
Apply the same numbe fo plies and types of roofing materials as used in the roofing specification over the repaired cut-out area. Extend first ply 4 inches beyond the cut-out on all sides. Extend each succeeding ply 4 inches beyond the underlying ply, except that the final ply shall be full width of the roll, centered over the samples. Each ply shall be mopped solidly to the underlying plies.
