About this file

This is a Statement of Work and Specification Document for the procurement of a Locomotion Compensator Insect Behavior Monitoring System by the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Biological Control of Insects Research Laboratory in Columbia, Missouri.

The requirement is for one complete locomotion compensating servosphere system capable of monitoring and recording movements of insects ranging in size from 1-10mm. The system is needed to develop an objective assay system for quantifying insect movements and evaluating the effectiveness of compounds and molecules designed to interfere with insect chemosensory systems. The Sphere Unit must include a 300mM diameter sphere with aerostatic support, X and Y motors and encoders, sensor and light source support, and side mount support. The Control Unit must include a power supply, video display, signal conditioning electronics, feedback adjustment (gain and filter), light source power supply and regulator, RS232 serial data output, event status inputs, and an air pump for aerostatic support. Additional components include a Video CMOS camera with macro zoom lens, IR and Visible LED illuminators, mounting brackets for stimulus tube and side-view camera, and the 'TrackSphere' software program for collecting displacement data, reconstructing walking paths, and providing track analysis. The delivery schedule requires completion within 150 days after receipt of award. All inspections and acceptance shall be performed by the assigned Contracting Officers Representative. The key contact is Jacob Corcoran at jacob.corcoran@usda.gov, (573-882-4056).

Statement of Work (SOW) Project: Locomotion Compensator, Insect Behavior Monitoring System

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Scope of Work:

Procurement of a locomotion compensator insect behavior monitoring system. The goal of purchasing this piece of equipment is to develop a robust, objective assay system capable of quantifying insect movements. This equipment is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of compounds and molecules designed to interfere with the insect chemosensory system.

2.0 Background:

Current research objectives of the Biological Control of Insects Research Laboratory in Columbia, Missouri, is to identify and develop novel tools that can be used to control agricultural pest insects. Unit scientists specialize in identifying the molecules involved in the insect olfactory system and use various means to interfere with their normal function, seeking to develop tools that can be used to modify insect foraging behavior and therefore prevent crop damage. The unit does not currently possess equipment to objectively evaluate the effectiveness of these tools.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Introduction:

1.1 The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific inhouse research agency with the mission to deliver scientific solutions to national and global agricultural challenges.

The ARS has been tasked to find solutions to agricultural problems that affect Americans every day from field to table. The ARS delivers cutting-edge, scientific tools and innovative solutions for American farmers, producers, industry, and communities to support the nourishment and well-being of all people; sustain our nation’s agroecosystems and natural resources; and ensure the economic competitiveness and excellence of our agriculture.

1.2 The USDA, ARS, Biological Control of Insects Research Laboratory, located in Columbia, Missouri, has a requirement for biophysical instrumentation designed to objectively monitor, record, and quantify insect movements.

2.0 Objectives: This requirement is for a Locomotion Compensating device capable of recording and analyzing the movements of insects ranging in size from 1-10 mm.

This system allows for analytical procedures that permit the rapid identification of chemical signals that influence insect behavior, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of behavior-modifying compounds under development as pest control tools.

3.0 Specifications:

Locomotion Compensator must possess the following characteristics:

1) Sphere Unit:
