About this file
This document outlines key requirements for an Automated Soil Sensor Probe designed to measure soil carbon content and related soil properties in situ to a depth of at least 12 inches with geo-referenced data points.
The instrument must measure four primary parameters simultaneously: soil organic matter or total soil carbon, soil penetration resistance, bulk soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa), and soil dielectric permittivity for soil water content determination (designated as low importance). Data collection must occur instantaneously as the instrument travels across the field, with each data point georeferenced to enable high-resolution soil mapping. The probe must be flexible enough to mount on light to heavy duty vehicles. Supporting capabilities include the ability to log, download, process, and transfer data to commercial software packages, an optional real-time data visualization feature, and reasonable manufacturer support and training.

Text version
Key requirements for an Automated Soil Sensor Probe, with the capability to measure soil carbon content in situ to a depth of at least 12 inches and the capability to geo-reference each data point.
The instrument must be capable to measure:
Soil organic matter or total soil carbon from the surface to at least 12 inches depth
Soil penetration resistance from the surface to at least 12 inches depth Bulk soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) from the surface to at least 12 inches Soil dielectric permittivity that enables soil water content determination (low importance)
Measurement mode:
The data must be collected instantaneously as the instrument travels across the field.
The instrument must be capable to collect all four data types simultaneously Each data point should be georeferenced so that high resolution soil maps can be generated.
Flexibility to mount the instrument on light to heavy duty vehicles
Additional requirements
Capability to log, download, process, and transfer the data to commercial software packages
Option to visualize the data in real-time Manufacturer must provide reasonable support and training
