About this file
This is a procurement requirement document for a drawer/specimen-scanning system issued by the United States Department of Agriculture's Systematic Entomology Laboratory (USDA-SEL).
USDA-SEL seeks to procure a GigaMacro Magnify 2 system or equivalent drawer/specimen-scanning system capable of high-resolution digitization of entomological specimens, microscope slides, and research materials. The system must support gigapixel-level imagery production combining robotics, high-performance optics, backlighting, and computing infrastructure. Mandatory technical specifications include: robotics and automation for large-format gigapixel imagery; imaging workflow designed for stitching, stacking, and automated capture; 65mm manual focus macro lens with 1-5x and 1/3/5x telecentric objective lenses; integrated software and control computing environment; backlighting and templates for standard microscope slides (75mm x 25mm) and pinned insect specimens; integrated control computer with monitor; and a telecentric lens (~0.4x) for 35mm full frame sensors to enhance image stitching accuracy. The vendor must provide all necessary components for out-of-box operation and offer optional on-site installation and training services. Delivery is required 60 days after receipt of order to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, 10th Street & Constitution Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20560. No pricing terms, response dates, award dates, or contract vehicle type are specified in this requirement document.

Requirement:
GigaMacro Magnify 2 - drawer/specimen-scanning system (Brand Name or Equal)
General Information The United States Department of Agriculture’s Systematic Entomology Laboratory (USDA‑SEL) intends to procure a drawer/specimen-scanning system, inclusive of all hardware, optical components, templates, lighting systems, imaging lenses, adapters, and support services necessary for high‑resolution digitization of entomological specimens/drawers, microscope slides, and other research materials. The system will support high‑throughput imaging needs for research, archiving, and curation.
Background USDA‑SEL requires robust, high‑fidelity digital imaging platforms capable of producing gigapixel‑level imagery of specimens ranging from macroscopic to microscopic scale. A system that integrates robotics, high‑performance optics, backlighting, and computing infrastructure to produce large, stitched, high‑resolution images suitable for research, public dissemination, and long‑term archiving is required. The system must combine automated image capture, precision optics, and specialized templates designed for pinned entomology specimens and microscope slide digitization. This makes the GigaMacro Magnify 2 system highly essential.
Technical Requirements The selected drawer/specimen-scanning system must have the following specifications to meet USDA-SEL’s requirements: (i) Robotics and automation sufficient for large‑format gigapixel imagery; (ii) Imaging workflow designed for stitching, stacking, and automated capture; (iii) 65mm manual focus macro lens, 1-5x and 1/3/5x telecentric objective lenses and ; (iv) Integrated software and control computing environment; (v) backlighting and appropriate templates for imaging standard microscope slides (75mmx25mm) and pinned insect specimens; (vi) integrated control computer with monitor; and (vii) telecentric lens for 35mm full frame sensors to enhance image stitching accuracy for large subjects.
The drawer/specimen-scanning system shall include all necessary components for out-of-box operation and the option for on-site installation and training should be offered by the vendor.
Objectives The vendor will provide an ultra-high-resolution slide scanning microscope system meeting the requirements defined herein.
