About this file

This document is a specifications sheet for the procurement of a Buchi S-300 Mini Spray Dryer System to support a USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) project focused on emerging processing and preservation technologies for healthy food production and concept product development. The acquisition requires one benchtop mini spray dryer unit with specific technical capabilities for drying food and liquid emulsions through rapid spray drying and microencapsulation processes. The equipment must meet minimum requirements including benchtop configuration, compatibility with aqueous formulations containing up to 20% organic solvents, particle size production no larger than 100 microns, fast flow rate with short residence time of less than 2 seconds, product temperature measurement in the collection vessel, auto-mode capability for unattended operation, one-year extended warranty, and installation services.

Delivery is required to USDA ARS located at 800 Buchanan Street, Albany, California 95620 within 60 days after receipt of order (ARO). The specification permits brand name or equal alternatives to the Buchi S-300, allowing vendors to propose functionally equivalent equipment that meets all stated minimum requirements. The document emphasizes the equipment's essential role in supporting the project through its capability to rapidly dry samples while preserving nutrient stability and enabling microencapsulation of active materials with controlled release properties.

SPECIFICATIONS – Buchi S-300 (Brand Name or Equal) Mini Spray Dryer System

Background:

The acquisiƟon involves procuring a Mini Spray Dryer that will support our project “Emerging processing and preservaƟon technologies to produce healthy foods and develop concept products”. A spray dryer is a unit operaƟon used to dry food or liquid emulsions. The emulsion is sprayed out of a nozzle into micro sizes and dried within seconds in a heated chamber, and the parƟculates are collected within the chamber. The dried emulsion can be hydrated quickly and used as an ingredient in other food products.

The rapid drying helps to preserve nutrients. A spray dryer can also be used for microencapsulaƟon to encapsulate acƟve materials (flavors, drugs, probioƟcs) within a protecƟve shell/matrix, forming a dry powder, using heat to instantly evaporate solvent. This process provides long-term stability, controlled release, and ingredient protecƟon.

The Buchi S-300 Mini Spray Dryer System is a small benchtop unit (62x64x105 cm). It is capable to safely handle aqueous formulaƟons with up to 20% organic solvents. It is capable of producing parƟcles at a fast rate in the range of 2-60 microns. The residence Ɵme is extremely low (<2s) ensuring the stability of labile acƟve compounds. It also measures the product temperature in the collecƟon vessel using PT-1000 temperature probes for faster response and greater accuracy. The unit can also run in auto-mode. The Buchi S-300 will be essenƟal in supporƟng our project.
