Corrosion resistant aluminum sheet – aluminum alloy 6061-T6 (ASTM B209), 1/8 inch thick.
4.7.2.2 Adhesion test (standard condition peel test). Condition a set of test panels as listed in 4.7.2.1 and three (3) sets of 1-inch by 6-inch film samples of each color at a temperature of 73 ± 3° F (23 ± 2° C) and 50 ± 5% relative humidity for 24 hours prior to testing per ASTM D4956 S1.2.1 Test Condition. Apply seven (7) 1-inch by 6-inch film samples (one sample of each color) to the three (3) types of test panels by bonding 4 inches of one end of each film sample to the test panels. Suspend the panel in a horizontal position with the samples facing down. Attach a 1-3/4 lb (0.794 kg) weight to the free end and allow it to hang free at an angle of 90° to the panel surface for 5-minutes. At the end of the 5-minute time period, measure the distance of peeling. If the distance of peeling is greater than 2.0 inches (51mm), the film sample fails.
4.7.2.3 Adhesion test (low temperature peel test). Condition a set of test panels as listed in 4.7.2.1 and three (3) sets of 1-inch by 6-inch film samples of each color at a temperature of +20° F (+3/-0°) F (-7° C (+2 /- 0°) C) and 50 ± 5% relative humidity for 4 hours. Apply seven (7) 1-inch by 6-inch film samples (one sample of each color) each to the three (3) types of test panels by bonding 4 inches of one end of each film sample to the panels. After applying the film samples, maintain the test panels at +20° (+3/-0°) F (-7° C (+2 /- 0°) C) and 50 ± 5% relative humidity for 24 hours. While maintaining these conditions of temperature and humidity, attach a 0.5-lb (0.23-kg) weight to the free end and allow it to hang free at an angle of 90° to the panel surface for 5 minutes. At the end of the 5-minute time period measure the distance of peeling. If the distance of peeling is greater than 2.0 inches, the film sample fails.
4.7.2.4 Rejection criteria. Failure of any one sample to meet all the requirements for adhesion, as defined by a failure of the tests outlined in 4.7.2.2 and 4.7.2.3, shall constitute a failure of this test for all materials in a given lot.
4.7.3 Mechanical tests. The following mechanical tests determine conformance to paragraphs 3.4.3 (film thickness), 3.4.5 (flexibility of film), and 3.4.8 (shrinkage). Successful completion of these tests shall be considered as demonstrating conformance to these paragraphs.
4.7.3.1 Thickness test. Measure the film thickness using digital calipers or a micrometer after pulling back the liner covering the adhesive on rear of film. Ensure the film has not stretched while removing the liner.
Maximum film thickness shall not exceed 0.020 inch.
4.7.3.2 Flexibility test. Condition a 1-inch by 6-inch sample of all film colors at a temperature of 73 ± 3° F (23 ± 2° C) and 50 ± 5% relative humidity for 24 hours. Remove the liner and dust the adhesive with talcum powder. In one second of time bend the film around a 1/8-inch mandrel with the adhesive contacting the mandrel. The film shall not crack or delaminate.
4.7.3.3 Shrinkage test. While maintaining a temperature of 73 ± 3° F (23 ± 2° C) and 50 ± 5% relative humidity, remove the liner from a 12-inch by 12-inch film sample of each color and place the samples on a flat surface with the adhesive side up. Measure the length and width of the samples after 10 minutes and again after 24 hours. The film shall not shrink more than 0.5% (less than 0.0625” or 1/16” in any direction) in ten minutes and not more than 2.0% (less than 0.25” or 1/4” in any direction) in 24 hours.
4.7.3.4 Rejection criteria. Failure of any one film sample to meet all the requirements for mechanical tests, as defined by a failure of the tests outlined in 4.7.3.1 through 4.7.3.3, shall constitute a failure of the whole qualification procedure for that particular lot.
4.7.4 Environmental tests. The environmental tests outlined in this section shall be used to determine the ability of films to withstand conditions encountered during service in a marine environment, as described in 3.5. Successful completion of these tests shall be considered as demonstrating conformance to 3.5.1 through 3.5.5.
