About this file

This is a policy document outlining the roles, responsibilities, and requirements for religious education and catechists within the Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS).

The document establishes that the senior priest-chaplain serves as Director of Religious Education (DRE) for Catholic programs on military installations and holds ultimate authority on all Catholic matters. The Coordinator of Religious Education (CRE) must be a certified AMS Catechist and reports directly to the priest-chaplain. All catechists utilized on military installations must obtain AMS certification. Religious education programs across installations are coordinated to facilitate personnel transitions, and all catechetical literature must appear on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Conformity List. The AMS established "Forming Disciples for the New Evangelization" as the curriculum guide for grades Pre-K through 8th (effective January 25, 2013) and "Adolescent Catechesis" for grades 9-12 (effective February 11, 2016).

Catechist certification requires: (1) practicing Catholic status with receipt of the Confirmation sacrament, (2) recommendation by the senior priest at the installation, (3) satisfactory completion of the AMS catechist certification program, and (4) submission of an application through the myAMS portal. Basic Catechist Certification is valid for three years starting March 19, 2017. All catechists must complete a favorable background check per local base/post policy and complete training on child protection as outlined in the Dallas Charter. The AMS partners with the University of Dayton's Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation and Catholic Distance University to offer reduced-rate online courses, with in-person training available upon request.
