VISN 10
VA HEALTHCARE SYSTEM SERVING OHIO, INDIANA AND MICHIGAN
Annual
Honoring America’s Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.
Report
2 Annual Report 2018 • www.visn10.va.gov
Message from the Network Director Our outstanding network of medical centers and community clinics are honored to serve Veterans in Michigan’s lower peninsula, Indiana, Ohio, and Northern Kentucky. Our medical centers are among the best in the country.
In 2018, three of our medical centers earned 5-star ratings in the VA SAIL performance measurement model. The SAIL Star ratings identify the best practices of the VA’s top performing medical centers. VISN 10 is proud to have three 5-star medical centers in Saginaw, Northeast Ohio, and Cincinnati.
Congratulations for a job well done!
Our staff at all facilities embody the VISN 10 values every day: integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence. We are committed to employing the best people, providing the best care, and developing innovative technology and treatments to meet Veterans’ changing medical and quality of life needs.
But our reach doesn’t stop there. In 2018, it was our honor to serve Veterans not only in the VISN 10 area, but in far-reaching ways that will positively impact countless lives for years to come. Last year, VISN 10 reached out to Veterans through local community programs, improvements to the medical centers, advances in technology, and outreach to Veterans and non-Veterans alike in communities such as Houston and Puerto Rico when hurricane season devastated local communities.
We are always ready and willing to provide the best care and support possible, reach as many Veterans as possible, and partner with our communities near and far. Every Veteran, everywhere, deserves the best care.
In the following pages, you’ll learn about some of the recent accomplishments at our facilities, as well as the outstanding people behind them. We are thankful to them for all they do, and to you for all your support and commitment to our mission.

• Doctors at VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System are working to create a 3D-printed artificial lung that could potentially revolutionize treatment of Veterans affected by lung disease. The artificial lung, small enough to fit in a backpack or fanny pack, could be a short-term option for patients who are waiting for a transplant or whose lungs need support while healing.
• VAAAHS’s recent adoption of the UroNav™ fusion biopsy system and cross-disciplinary planning efforts offer a cutting-edge biopsy option for many patients at risk for prostate cancer. Using MRI images and ultrasound, the new technology offers more precision and more accurate results than other options, giving Veteran patients more peace of mind.
• In the wake of a brutally devastating Atlantic hurricane season, VAAAHS employee volunteers deployed to Puerto Rico and Houston, supporting disaster relief and recovery efforts.
Through the Disaster Emergency Medical Personnel System (DEMPS), clinical and non-clinical VA employee volunteers were sent to support VA facilities and/or communities in disaster areas, providing services to both Veterans and non-Veterans.
• The VAAAHS Simulation Center Program was granted Basic Level Facility Certification by the Veterans Health Administration SimLEARN National Simulation Center.
The program provides staff with training that enhances the quality and safety of patient care. This further solidifies our status as a national leader of multi-disciplinary education in health care.

In addition, 5,625 Veterans were served by the Homeless Continuum of Care.
• The Recovery Implementation Team hosted the annual Trick or Treat event, one of many similar events held throughout the year to support Veterans in their recovery and to help reduce the stigma of mental illness. A variety of community partners provided information and education to encourage Veterans to seek help and access their available resources.
• Launched the United through Reading Program for Veterans as part of our Psychosocial Residential Rehabilitation Program.
This initiative allows Veterans to make a video while reading a story for a family member that can be sent to them with the book. This helps maintain family connections during physical separation while the Veteran is seeking treatment.

Visual Therapy Murals were painted on the walls of the Community Living Center that houses Veterans suffering from dementia, funded by the VHA Innovators Networks Spark-Speed- Spread. Research shows that visual stimulation with certain colors and nostalgic images can decrease anxiety as well as bring back fond memories. These murals help to bring the outside in and create a home-like community for the Veterans who reside in the neighborhood (unit). These 19 “neighborhood” murals include a general store, gas station, post office, and beautiful landscapes.
Several artists contributed to the project, each with a personal connection to the mission. Funding has also been received to spread the design to four other dementia units in VAMCs across the country.

• Cincinnati VAMC earned a five-star SAIL Rating for 2017, ranked 7th out of 130 VA healthcare facilities. It is one of two VISN 10 facilities to earn a five-star rating. SAIL ratings evaluate and promote quality, safety, and efficiency across all VHA medical centers. The five-star rating reflects our commitment to providing our Veterans with the highest quality health care.
• In 2018, Cincinnati VAMC finished with an 88% Trust score among Veterans who receive care at the Cincinnati VA. The nationwide VA average was 86%. The yearly survey focuses on patient trust of VA health care services. The results help the VA to identify areas of improvement.
• In 2018, the Cincinnati VAMC introduced the use of a VHA application called VEText. VEText is an interactive mobile solution designed to remind Veterans of upcoming appointments via text messaging.
VEText allows Veterans to easily confirm or cancel appointments.
Canceled appointments can then be offered to other Veterans, making healthcare more accessible to all.

Nearly 300 rocks were painted by Veterans, staff, and volunteers, each with a message of hope and kindness. The Veterans Crisis Line information was also placed on each rock before they were located throughout the community.

• In November, we celebrated the opening of a newly renovated fourth floor inpatient wing and sterile processing basement with a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Renovations included nine patient rooms, a four-room intensive care unit, and a sterile processing room in the basement.
The updated rooms will provide more privacy for Veterans, and the new sterile processing area will allow onsite sterilization of equipment.
• In September, Dr. Lionel Brounts, General Surgeon and Army Veteran, established a medical education program at VA Northern Indiana. Working with the Indiana University School of Medicine-Fort Wayne, he started with hosting a single medical student and quickly grew the program to a four-student rotation.
His goal is to build a strong medical education program, introducing rotations in a variety of specialties, and eventually have a full medical resident program. His personal passion for medical education and experience teaching in the military led him to start the program. He is also a teaching professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine-Fort Wayne.
• VA Northern Indiana and the YMCA have teamed up to offer aqua therapy for pain management, weight management, and health promotion.
The pilot program had 14 Veteran participants, and the VA has received requests from Veterans to hold additional programs. The program is a volunteer effort;
pool time is donated, and the therapists are all volunteering their time and expertise.

Reaching Out to Veterans in Crisis
Suicide prevention awareness is an ongoing goal for the entire VA system. According to recent statistics, twenty Veterans commit suicide per day. Of those twenty, an average of fourteen were not receiving care through the VA. Veterans who receive care through the VA have a reduced suicide risk. The VA is committed to reaching as many Veterans as possible – both within the VA and in the community – to start the conversation about suicide prevention. VISN 10 continues to support Veterans through the ongoing #BeThere campaign to prevent Veteran suicide. We will never stop reaching out to our Veterans in crisis.
Virtual Hope Box app is a mental health support tool that can be personalized with photos, sound, and videos of loved ones to support a Veteran in crisis.
Reach Out: Suicide Prevention Resources
Suicide prevention resources are not limited to the healthcare setting. Additional, easily accessible resources can be found where Veterans live:
The Veterans Crisis Line is available 24/7.
Dial 1-800-273-8255 and press 1. This resource is for everyone.
The LifeArmor app has information and tools to assist members of the military with mental health concerns. LifeArmor is available for both iOS and Android devices.
Ask for help using Siri on an iPhone or Google Assistant on an
Android phone. Say "Call the Veterans' Crisis Line" and then press 1 to connect.
The VA’s Coaching into Care phone program offers resources to educate and empower families and friends who are seeking care and/or services for a veteran. Call 1-888-823-7458.
