About this file

This document is Attachment 2 to a 2026 Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) containing individual item requirements and cleaning standards for specialty wildland firefighting equipment and supplies.

Items identified as specialty pieces must adhere to National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) cleaning standards found at https://www.nwcg.gov/publications/pms448, while items not located in NWCG standards are laundered at industrial standards. Nomex garments (pants, shirts, flight suits) require specialized cleaning per DuPont's Nomex Aramid Fiber Laundering Guide (H71603), prohibiting bleach use and requiring separate washing to avoid contamination with flammable fiber lint, water temperatures not exceeding 140°F for optimal color retention, adequate rinsing to remove residual chemicals, and tumble dry or dry cleaning as alternatives for heavy soil. Cold weather sleeping bags (Class 4 Cordura) require front-loading machines with mild soap at temperatures not exceeding 130°F, three wash and rinse cycles, and bleach sterilization at 50 ppm in the final cycle before drying in reverse-action tumblers. Tent equipment (2-person tents, wall tents, tent flies) require unfolding for defect inspection, sweeping with stiff-bristle brushes, washing with water and mild degreaser detergent, thorough rinsing, and air drying. Class 1 Cordura items (packs, cases, canteen carriers) permit machine washing on gentle cycles with cold water and mild detergents, with air drying required and bleach prohibited. All vendor laundry facilities must receive copies of applicable refurbishment standards and comply with both manufacturer specifications and local agency agreements. Life jackets (PFD) require soft-brush scrubbing with detergent solution, oxygen-based bleach for mold or mildew treatment (not chlorine bleach), thorough rinsing, and drip drying away from direct sunlight, with post-drying inspection for water retention and mildew odor.

• Place the life jackets, with all straps and hardware, unfastened, on the tarp, and scrub all surfaces of the jacket using the detergent solution and a soft brush. For tough stains like red mud or food, apply a dab of the detergent (not bleach) directly onto the stain.

Work it in with the brush and allow the jacket to sit for at least 15 minutes before rinsing.

• If the jacket has mold or mildew, move to an outside area and brush away any visible spores before wetting the fabric. Scrub as suggested but add 1/4 cup of oxygen-based bleach to the cleaning solution. This will help remove dark stains.

• Rinse well using a hose or plenty of clean water, smoothing the fabric to ensure you rinse all the crevices.

• Hang the jacket to drip dry, preferably out of direct sunlight.

• After the life jackets are dry to the touch, check for any puckering or shrinkage. Be sure no water is caught in the interior foam and that there is no mildew odor.

• Do not use chlorine bleach directly on a jacket as it can break down fabrics and interior foam.
