Draft Specifications for Large CNC Full Contouring 5/6 Axis Gantry Mill at Arnold

Air Force Base, TN; Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC)

Provide all materials, labor, and equipment necessary to provide a new fully functional Large CNC Full 5/6

Axis Gantry Milling Machine. Refurbished or remanufactured parts are not authorized for this requirement.

• Machining center construction o Base, Bed and Headstock shall be Meehanite Cast Iron.

o Ways shall be hardened and ground with box ways or linear roller bearings.

o Protective covers to protect ways/ball screws.

o Base shall include a roll out Coolant tank and Chip Tray.

o Fixed table, moving Gantry or moving table fixed Gantry.

• Headstock Specification o Spindle drive motor 50 HP minimum.

o Spindle Taper shall be Cat 50.

o Spindle speeds 0 to 7000 RPM Range with adequate precision high speed bearings.

o Coolant through Spindle at 125psi minimum.

o Spindle taper equipped with internal air curtain for cleanout.

• Work Table o Length 264” Minimum.

o Width 84” Minimum.

o Table shall support a minimum of 55,000 lbs.

o Table equipped with standard “T” slots.

• Heads o 90 degree/right angle head.

o Extension head.

o Extension high speed head.

o Full contouring 5-axis head tilting & rotating.

o Head expansion slot or slots for additional heads.

• Tool Changer(Automatic) o Changer shall handle tools weighing minimum 15 lbs. and 11” in length.

o Changer Magazine shall hold a minimum of 20 tools, maximum tool size is 5”.

o Changer or equivalent to handle extra heads with 8 or more slots

• Controls o Fanuc 31i-B or Heidenhain, or latest version with 12” minimum Color LCD.

o Minimum 2Mbyte Memory with Ethernet drip feed capabilities.

o Controls shall be equipped with thermal, angular, and linear compensation software.

o Equipped with tool setter.

o Helical interpolation and Custom Macro B o AC Digital Servo & Spindle Drivers on all axis or Linear Drives.

o Capable of rigid tapping o Heat Exchanger for Electrical Cabinet.

o Data Server 256MB (DNC) min.

o Conversational programming capabilities.

o Controls cabinet shall be cooled.

o DNC Capability o Programming should be compatible with FANUC protocol or standard G code.

o High Speed Machining Capability o Machine shall be equipped with Renishaw style probe tooling for part inspection and software o Remove / Disconnect Wi-Fi.

o Ethernet Connectivity o RTCP, Rotary Tool CenterPoint Control

• Accuracy o Repeatability for X, Y, & Z Axis shall be .0003” o Positioning for X, Y, & Z Axis shall be .0003”/12” o o

• General o X-axis travel Minimum 204”.

o Y-Axis travel Minimum 96”.

o Z-Axis travel Minimum 42”.

o A-axis travel Minimum +110 deg., -60 deg.

o C-axis travel Minimum + or – 185 deg.

o Rotary axis table/head o Spindle quill (W axis) travel Minimum 8” or “tilting plane” feature.

o Auto Lubrication system.

• Contractor shall provide:

o X, Y, & Z Heidenhain glass scales with purge system.

o Spindle bearings shall be cooled.

o Machine shall include lifting, leveling, and floor attachment hardware.

o Machine quote shall include 24 of the required retention knobs.

o Machine shall be equipped with Renishaw style probe tooling and associated software for part inspection.

o Fanuc/Heidenhain Operating & Maintenance Manual.

o Quote shall include the standard tooling package including retainers applicable for this machine.

To Include Tooling Voucher of $10,000.

o Machine shall be built to NFPA 70 and operate with AEDC power system which is 480V, 3PH, 60 HZ or quote package should include step down transformer to machine operation voltage.

o Operation Manual, Electrical Manual, Maintenance Manual & Schematics.

o Quote shall include Tool setter.

o Post Processor for Esprit CAM software

• Verification o After delivery the Contractor shall test run the machine at the site in accordance with functional tests for accuracy required by ISO/ANSI Standards.

• Warranty o This machine shall be warranted against any defects in material, parts, and workmanship for 24 months after the date of installation. The control, servomotors and main spindle motor are warranted against defects in material, parts, and workmanship for 24 months after the date of installation.

• Maintenance, Parts and Service o The Contractor shall have the capability to service the equipment (labor and parts) beyond the warranty period, or the equipment shall be able to be serviced by a local qualified representative.

The Contractor or representative shall be capable of responding to a repair service call on-site within 36 hours and repair parts delivery within 48 hours after placement of order.

• Packaging/Delivery o Provide all preservation, packaging, and packing to ensure safe delivery of the machine and related components to AEDC (FOB Arnold Air Force Base, TN 37389).

Deliver Machine to AEDC for off-loading by AEDC personnel.

• Installation/Training o Installation will be at the Arnold Air Force Base, TN; Arnold Engineering Development

Complex’s Model Shop, West Shop, Building 451. Installation of the machine shall be accomplished by Model Shop personnel and supervised by factory trained servicemen. This service shall be included in machine cost. Two day initial training on machine features and operation shall be done beginning at machine startup following machine installation and should be included in machine cost.
