SECTION C

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

Work for this project consists of reconditioning designated 3.0 miles of Benson Road #7045 roadway per Base Item (with Optional Items for additional designated reconditioning) to a fourteen (14) foot wide roadway in preparation for furnishing, hauling, and placing approximately 2,520 cubic yards of specified aggregate base course as Shown on the Drawings.

Finish blade the placed aggregate to provide a smooth running surface with a centerline crown, as applicable. Reference (FP-14) Standard Specifications for Construction of Roads and Bridges as shown in the Specifications and Drawings.

Work to be completed shall be as shown in the Schedule of Items and described as follows:

Base Item:

-Recondition the designated 3.0 miles of roadway to provide for a fourteen (14) foot wide running surface. Compaction Method A.

-Design quantity payment.

-Deliver and place 3.0 miles of specified aggregate base course to a twelve (12) foot wide running surface, 4 inch compacted depth and 1 foot taper each side. This equates to approximately 2,520 cubic yards compacted in place. Compaction Method A. Finish blade to a smooth running surface.

-Design quantity payment.

Option Item 1:

-Recondition an additional designated 1.0 mile of roadway (per Option Items up to 2 miles total) to provide for a fourteen (14) foot wide running surface. Compaction Method A.

-Design quantity payment.

-Deliver and place 1.0 mile of specified base course to a twelve (12) foot wide running surface, 4 inch compacted depth and 1 foot taper each side. This equates to approximately 840 cubic yards compacted in place. Compaction Method A. Finish blade to a smooth running surface.

Option Item 2:

-Recondition an additional designated 0.5 mile of roadway (per Option Items up to 2 miles total) to provide for a fourteen (14) foot wide running surface. Compaction Method A.

-Deliver and place 0.5 mile of specified base course to a twelve (12) foot wide running surface, 4 inch compacted depth and 1 foot taper each side. This equates to approximately 420 cubic yards compacted in place. Compaction Method A. Finish blade to a smooth running surface.

1.2 LOCATION

A. This project is located within the Fall River Ranger District, Buffalo Gap National Grasslands, Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands. Beginning at Smithwick, South Dakota, travel east on Fall River County Road 1 approximately 8.5 miles, then continue left on Fall River County Road 1E for approx. ½ mile to the beginning of NFRS 7045 on the right. Project begins here as staked on the ground by the Government and as Shown on the Drawings.

1.3 GENERAL SITE CONDITIONS AND WEATHER

A. The elevation of the site is approximately 3,400 feet above mean sea level. The construction site experiences snowfall and cold temperatures in the winter with snow on the ground typically from mid-November through March. Summers can be hot and dry with temperatures reaching 90 degrees.

1.4 USE OF PREMISES

A. General: Contractor shall have full use of premises on Government property for construction operations, including use of Project site, during construction period. Contractor's use of Government premises is limited only by the Government's right to perform work or to retain other contractors on portions of Project. The Contractor shall not trespass onto the adjoining private lands unless written permission is received from landowner.

B. Contractor shall at all times conduct his operations to ensure the least inconvenience to the public and employees. Closures will be permitted, when required, upon written approval by Contracting Officer (CO).

C. Contractor shall provide adequate signing and barricades according to MUTCD and take necessary safety measures to protect the public during all construction operations. Contractor shall minimize disturbance of all undisturbed areas.

D. Existing Utilities: The Contractor is responsible for notifying all untility companies for utility locates prior to starting excavation work.

E. Contractor shall remove all equipment, trash, materials, and other items associated with the work within 7 calender days of final acceptance of work prior to final payment being processed by the CO.

1.5 MEALS AND LODGING

A. Meals and lodging are commercially available in Hot Springs, South Dakota.

1.6 CAMPING

A. With approval by the Fall River Ranger District, National Forest Service lands may be used by the Contractor to have one fully contained recreation vehicle which may remain at this site for security.

1.7 CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE

A. Construction season may begin August 1st, 2023 and end by October 24, 2023.

B. Depending on conditions, normal fire restrictions may apply to activities associated with this project.

1.8 FIELD VERIFICATION

A. Field verification of the roadway condition shall be the responsibility of the Contractor.

Locations to turn-around haul vehicles most be approved by the CO prior to start of work.

1.9 PERMITS

A. Any permits for hauling as required by local, County, State, or Federal laws or regulations shall be obtained by the Contractor.
