What is COVID-19?

• New virus, Coronavirus family

– Includes viruses that cause a common cold; and the viruses that cause SARS and MERS

• Usually causes headache, fatigue, runny nose, cough, sore throat, muscle pains.

• Can also cause fever, trouble breathing, pneumonia, shut down of body systems, and death.

WHAT IS COVID-19?

How does it spread?

• This virus can spread from person-to-person.

• Like flu, it mainly spreads in droplets in the air from breathing, coughing, or sneezing.

These droplets are easy to inhale and infect anyone nearby.

• When the droplets land on a surface it can spread when you touch the surface then touch your mouth, eyes, or nose or someone else.

• Some people may spread the virus before they have symptoms that are noticeable.

Why is COVID-19 worrisome?

• For most, COVID-19 will cause mild or moderate disease

• For some, it can cause very severe disease and death

• People with mild symptoms can later develop severe disease, particularly in the second week they are ill

ISOLATION:

• Is for people with symptoms, and confirmed or suspected COVID-19

• Separates people with a contagious disease from those who are healthy

• Restricts movement of people with a contagious disease to stop spread

• Lets people who have a contagious disease get care in their homes, in hospitals, or in a designated facility

• Is usually voluntary; but governments may enforce to protect the public

QUARANTINE:

• Is for someone who is not sick, but has been exposed to a very contagious disease, such as COVID-19, and who may be able to spread it to others

• Involves monitoring, separation and restriction of movement

• Is usually decided by state health departments and state leaders

SOCIAL DISTANCING:

• Is limiting close contact between people, regardless of symptoms.

• Is good practice for everyone during a pandemic

• May include actions by local leaders, such as:

– School dismissals

– Cancellation of public gatherings

– Business closures

– Recommendations for telecommuting

– Prepare before it arrives

• Phase 2 – Widespread Outbreak

– Responding and adapting to an outbreak

• Phase 3 – Establish alternate sites of care

– High case load requiring use of alternative care sites

• Phase 4 – Operations

– Maintaining day-to-day operations (i.e., pre-COVID-19) plus COVID-19

Goals:

• Care for all Veterans needing care.

• Protect uninfected from infected persons.

• Manage large influx of patients.

Methods:

• Maximize virtual care.

• Control entry points and screen for symptoms.

• Separate patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 from those without.
