About this file

This document is a specifications file for a benchtop environmental temperature/humidity chamber procurement by the USDA Cereal Crops Research Unit.

The Mahalingam Laboratory requires an environmental chamber to conduct precise temperature stress screening of barley samples to identify frost-tolerant lines for breeding purposes. Standard growth chambers cannot achieve below-freezing temperatures, necessitating acquisition of a laboratory-grade unit. The chamber must achieve minimum temperatures of at least -15°C and maximum temperatures of at least 25°C with controlled humidity capability. The controller must support multi-step programming and precise temperature gradient changes. External dimensions must not exceed approximately 4 feet in any direction (length/width/height) due to lab space constraints, with internal dimensions capable of accommodating multiple trays of 6-cell planters (approximately 3.5" x 5" x 2.5"), totaling around 1.5' x 1.25' x 2'. Additional requirements include shelves, US-based customer service, at least a 12-month warranty, and compliance with NDAA Section 848 and Executive Order 13981. The chamber must contain no control, communication, sensor subcomponents, or software manufactured or developed in an "adversary country." Delivery is required to the USDA Cereal Crops Research Unit at 502 Walnut Street, Madison, WI 53726 by September 3, 2026. All quotes must include setup and delivery charges.

SPECIFICATIONS

Project: Benchtop Environmental Temperature/Humidity Chamber

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Scope of Work: Winter barley is of growing interest to barley breeders, growers, and stakeholders. An important trait for both winter and spring barley is cold and frost tolerance. The chamber will allow the performance of precise temperature stress screening of barley samples in order to identify frost tolerant lines.

2.0 Background: The Mahalingam Laboratory focuses on abiotic stress tolerance in order to identify line and loci associated with tolerance for breeders and growers.

Testing cold tolerance in field conditions requires the use of land and equipment and requires large volumes of seed to be planted. In addition, there can be substantial variation in the growing environment both between locations and year to year, particularly overstressing or under stressing plants, failing to produce a phenotype. To perform precise phenotyping of cold tolerance, an laboratory-grade environmental chamber must be acquired with capability to of simulating field temperatures. Standard growth chambers are not capable of or reaching below-freezing temperatures.

CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS

3.0 Technical Specifications:

• Minimum temperature: at least -15C

• Maximum temperature: at least 25C

• Humidity controlled

• Chamber controller allows multi-step programs and precise temperature gradient changer.

• Sufficient size to fit sample trays but small enough to fit in space available o Due to lab space constraints, a small benchtop chamber, external dimensions ~4’ or less in length/width/height o internal dimension capable of accommodating multiple trays of 6-cell planters (~3.5”x5” x 2.5”), so around~1 ½’ x1 ¼’ x 2’.

• Shelves

• US Based Customer Service

• At least a 12-month warranty

• NDAA section 848 and Executive Order 13981 compliant

• No control, communication, sensor subcomponents or software that is manufactured or developed in an “adversary country”.
