Project Pilot housing in McCall, Idaho
General Information
1.0 Scope of Work
This contract is to secure rental housing for agency smokejumper pilots that are temporarily detailed to McCall, Idaho from their regular duty station of Ogden, Utah. The desire is to secure 3 individual accommodations.
2.0 Background
Temporary housing is needed for pilots that are detailed to McCall, Idaho on a temporary basis to support the national smokejumper base there.
Hotel rooms are very scarce during the peak of the tourist season in McCall, which coincides with the time the smokejumper pilot services are most needed. Additional challenges occur when pilots are mobilized to distant incidents and return late to McCall without any accommodations available. Hours spent trying to find accommodations cuts into the pilots’ off-duty hours – delaying their mission start time the following day. During peak season months the federal government rate rooms are often not available and hotel rates soar to triple or higher of the established per diem rate.
From 2013 until 2022 houses were rented for the season to alleviate accommodation shortages and the high cost of housing pilots in hotels. This resulted in a significant savings to the government, aircraft continuously staffed and no accommodation shortages for the pilots.
