Statement of Work U.S Attorney’s Office, District of Columbia

Process Serving Services

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The mission of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia (USAO- DC) is to enforce the criminal laws of United States and the District of Columbia, defend the interests of the United States in civil litigation, and respond to the public safety needs of the District Columbia community by leading an effective, well-coordinated law enforcement effort that contributes to the overall goal of improving the quality of life in the District of Columbia.

The USAO-DC is divided into five litigating Divisions: Appellate, Civil, Federal

Criminal District, Special Proceedings and Superior Court. Other sub-divisional components include the Administrative Division, the Front Executive Office of the United States Attorney, Financial Litigation Unit, Intelligence, Criminal Investigative Units, Victim/Witness Assistance, and a Law Enforcement Coordination Office.

The USAO-DC is unique amongst the 94 U.S. Attorney’s Offices, not only by virtue of its size and its varied responsibilities, but their jurisdictional area of responsibility. Specifically, USAO-DC is the largest district office in the nation, with over 400 Assistant United States Attorneys and over 350 Support personnel. USAO-DC is the only district that adjudicates cases within two separate and distinct jurisdictions - the Federal District as well as the District of Columbia. With consideration to the latter, USAO-DC’s Superior Court Division functions like a local District Attorney’s Office, which entails prosecuting homicides, assaults, and sex crimes as well as other types of serious offenses.

The Civil Division represents the United States and its various departments and agencies, at both the trial and appellate levels in civil actions filed in their specific jurisdiction. Overall, they are part of the Department of Justice and provide legal and investigative services for lawsuits brought against, and by, the United States.
