Project Repair or replacement of the turbo pump on an IQ-X mass spectrometer

General Information

1.0 Scope of Work

Repair the malfunctioning turbo pump via replacement of cables, replacement of the pump, or both.

2.0 Background

In October 2025, the IQ-X experienced an unknown malfunction, resulting in the failure of one of three turbo pumps. It has been inoperable since. This equipment is essential to our research.

Contractor Requirements

3.0 Technical Requirements / Tasks

• Applicants must submit documentation from Thermo Scientific authorizing them to perform the repair.

• Diagnose the source of the malfunctioning turbo pump and determine whether it can be addressed via replacement of cables or requires replacement of the turbo pump, or both. Estimated time 1-4 hours.

• Perform necessary repairs to cables and/or replace the turbo pump. Estimated time 4-16 hours.

• Reboot the instrument and ensure that it is functioning as expected by conducting calibration procedures. This requires an overnight bakeout of the instrument. Calibration must meet pre-programmed tolerances before repair is considered complete. Estimated time 1-4 hours.

4.0 Government Furnished

The government will furnish access to the facility located in Gainesville, FL and supply any necessary routine laboratory equipment/consumables including LCMS solvents, an ultrasonic bath cleaner, drying oven, and glassware. Work will not be conducted on federal holidays.

5.0 Deliverables / Schedule

Repairs are expected to take no longer than three working days once initiated on site.

Reporting Requirements: The contractor is required to provide verbal progress reports daily for the period (2-3 days).

The progress report shall cover all work completed during the specified period and shall present the work to be accomplished during the subsequent period. This report shall also identify any problems that arose and a statement explaining how the problem was resolved. This report shall also identify any problems that have arisen but have not been completely resolved and provide an explanation.

6.0 Travel

A field service engineer/technician will need to travel on-site to conduct repairs. A standard travel fee and extended day fee will be paid in accordance with Federal regulations depending on the duration of repairs.

7.0 Contractor’s Key Personnel

Personnel must be certified to work on Thermo equipment, use Thermo OEM parts and have experience with IQ-X mass spectrometers.
