About this file
This Statement of Work outlines requirements for a high-output neutron generator for the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson AFB. The generator must provide consistent maximum neutron output of 1x10^10 neutrons/second with 5% output stability, operate at room temperature, and fit on a heavy-duty tabletop (under 1.5m length, 0.5m width/height, <100kg). The package includes ancillary equipment such as control electronics, heat exchanger, roughing pump, control computer with software, and manuals.
The contractor must provide on-site installation assistance and training for 2 people (up to 5 days), a 1-year maintenance contract including parts replacement and system upgrades, and ground shipping to Wright-Patterson AFB. Delivery and completion are required within 8 months of award, with 100% payment upon completion through Wide Area Workflow on net 30 terms. The generator will support multiple NENG courses including Nuclear Engineering Laboratory, Nuclear Instrumentation, and Advanced Nuclear Engineering Laboratory. The primary point of contact is Mr. Greg Smith at AFIT/ENP.

STATEMENT OF WORK
High Output Neutron Generator
4 February 2025
1.0. BACKGROUND: A neutron generator uses the fusion of either two deuterium atoms or a deuterium and tritium atom to output neutrons at high energy. High-output generators are capable of providing up to 1E10 neutrons per second. A source of neutrons with this output allows for a greater capacity for measurements during research and academic courses due to lower required measurement time. Additionally, the neutrons that are generated are high energy neutrons and allow for a wide range of study from spectrum identification to radiation hardening experiments. The capabilities provided by this generator is of great interest to other organizations who could provide funding for research projects.
The direct benefit of this generator is to students in the following NENG courses:
NENG612 - Nuclear Engineering Laboratory NENG650 - Nuclear Instrumentation NENG812 - Advanced Nuclear Engineering Laboratory
