About this file

This is a Statement of Work from the US Department of Agriculture for the acquisition of an automatic CFU (Colony Forming Unit) colony reader for the USDA APHIS Veterinary Services Division of Diagnostics and Biologics, Collegiate Veterinary Medicine-Pathology and Epidemiology Laboratory (CVB-PEL) located in Ames, Iowa.

The contractor must provide an automated colony counting and zone measuring machine with integrated imaging capabilities that meets specific technical requirements. The equipment must detect colonies as small as 43 microns, read plate sizes from 30mm to 150mm in diameter, accommodate multiple plate types (pour plates, spiral plates, antibiotic susceptibility tests), feature a 5 megapixel integrated camera, integrated PC, sliding doors to prevent light interference, three-color image capture channels, and modes to differentiate touching and mixed colonies. The machine must operate in a standalone environment without internet connectivity and require no software subscription. The equipment must use a standard USA Type B electrical plug. Delivery is required within 90 days of contract award. If contractor personnel are needed for installation under warranty, they must meet security screening requirements to access the NCAH campus at 1920 Dayton Avenue, Ames, IA 50010. All data rights remain with the CVB. The background section notes that the Synbiosis ProtoCOL 3 Plus HD was the only model that fulfilled all laboratory requirements.
