About this file

This document is a Statement of Objectives (SOO) for a Cognitive Assessment project for U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), focusing on enhancing team performance and innovation through strategic thinking agility. The primary objectives include developing an assessment and training framework that helps teams understand individual problem-solving preferences (Clarifier, Ideator, Developer, Implementer) to improve collaboration, reduce conflict, and streamline workflows across SOCOM groups.

The SOO outlines three key components: 1) A Cognitive Assessment designed to provide a strategic framework for improving team dynamics and operational performance, 2) Prototype Kits that allow groups to experience thinking preferences by constructing inventions and debriefing to reveal approach differences, and 3) Advanced Group Profiles that identify individual scores and enable deeper team-building conversations. The document emphasizes that without this approach, leaders would have fewer tools to circumvent conflict, build empathy, and leverage cognitive differences within their teams.

Statement of Objective for the Cognitive Assessment

Primary Deliverable: Enhanced Team Performance and Innovation Across SOCOM Through Strategic Thinking Agility

The desired assessment and associated training will provide SOCOM groups with a powerful framework for improving collaboration, problem-solving, and innovation across a wide range of operational and strategic challenges. By understanding individual preferences (Clarifier, Ideator, Developer, Implementer), teams can better leverage each member's strengths in the problem-solving process. This fosters more effective communication, reduces conflict, and streamlines workflows, regardless of the specific task or mission.

In summary, the assessment provides a strategic framework for enhancing team dynamics, problem-solving effectiveness, and innovation across all groups within SOCOM, ultimately contributing to improved operational performance and mission success.

If not approved, groups and leaders will be armed with less tools to circumvent conflict and improve team member cooperation. Specifically, leaders would not be aided with ways to grow empathy and appreciation, gain self-mastery in working with others, leverage cognitive differences, build better teams, which ultimately would augment a leader’s efforts to improve performance

Statement of Objective for the Prototype Kits

The prototype kits let groups experience thinking preferences in action. I group people by individual preference for approaching problem solving and ask each group to construct an invention. The debrief using these kits help reveal the fundamental differences of each approach.

The Advanced Group Profile

These profiles identify each person and their scores of an intact group. This type of group profile provides much more information about teams that they can better leverage each member's strengths in the problem-solving process. The regular profile only provides a distribution of scores but does not reveal that individual person. With an advanced group profile, groups engage on much deeper and richer conversation to support social contracting. For example, two days ago, I ran an offsite for t SOCOM’s J4.

They asked for this profile. It was a missed opportunity. It is not uncommon to receive this request to extend the conversation and team building efforts.
