DIVISION 2 SECTION 02373

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS GABIONS

A. Section Includes: Installing gabions with Contractor-furnished equipment and labor and

Government-furnished property.

2.1 ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION (AS PER MANUFACTURER)

Reno (gabion) mattresses are supplied folded flat and packed in bundles. The units shall be assembled individually by erecting the sides, ends, and diaphragms ensuring that all panels are in the correct position (see Fig. 1). Assembly and connections shall be accomplished using lacing wire and/or overlapping fasteners (see Fig. 2).

The procedure for using lacing wire consists of cutting a sufficient length of wire, and first looping and/or twisting to secure the lacing wire to the wire mesh. Proceed to lace with alternating double and single loops through every mesh opening approximately every 6 in. (150 mm) pulling each loop tight and finally securing the end of the lacing wire to the wire mesh by looping and/or twisting.

Stainless Steel overlapping fasteners (hog rings) may be used in lieu of, or to complement, lacing wire for basket assembly and installation.

2.2 Installation

After assembly, the gabion mattresses are carried to their final position and are securely joined together along the vertical and top edges of their contact surfaces using the same connecting procedure(s) described in Section 3.1.

2.3 Filling

Mattresses shall be filled with rock as specified in Section 2.5. During the filling operation some manual stone placement is required to minimize voids. It is also recommended to overfill the baskets by 1 to 2 inches to allow for settling and so that the rock is tightly confined by the Reno mattress lid, thereby minimizing any movement of ht rock under hydraulic load. Care shall be taken when placing fill material to ensure that the sheathing on the PVC coated baskets is not damaged.

2.4 Lid Closing

Once the Reno mattresses are completely full, the lids will be pulled tight until the lid meets the perimeter edges of the basket. A tool like a lid closer can be used. The lid must then be tightly laced and/or fastened along all edges, ends and tops of diaphragm(s) in the same manner as described in Section 3.1.

3.1 MATERIALS

A. SEE SECTION 01019 Government Furnished Property.

PART 4: EXECUTION

4.1 PREPARATION

A. Clearing: Clearing and grubbing will not be required by the contractor.

4.2 INSTALLATION

A. Assembly: Bind together unbound vertical edges with a continuous piece of connecting wire laced around the vertical edges (lacing shall include the heavy perimeter wires), as shown on the drawings. Anchor lacing and lace adjacent gabions along the perimeter of contact surfaces as shown on the drawings. Hooking (hog) rings may be used at 6-inch spacing for basket assembly and connection.

B. Gabions

1. Tiers: Set 2 staggered tiers of assembled gabion units running lengthwise across the dam at locations and to lines and grades as staked by the government prior to the project commencement. Each tier shall be set in place, laced and/or hog ringed, filled with rock filler, and approved by the Project Inspector before lids are laced and/or hog ringed down and successive tiers are placed. Lacing will be required by Project Inspector when baskets assembly, placement, and fill is adequate but less than optimal for prolonged exposure to wave wash.

2. Diaphragms: Where the length of the gabion exceeds its horizontal width, the gabion shall be equally divided by diaphragms, of the same mesh and gauge as the body of the gabions, into cells the length of which does not exceed the horizontal width. Diaphragms shall be tied on the vertical sides. Use lacing wire or hog rings to join adjacent baskets together.

3. Interconnections: Interconnect gabions and check alignment carefully before placing rock filler.

4. Basket Completion: When filling is complete, set lids over to close the basket, and secure lid firmly by lacing shut with connecting wires and/or hog rings according to specifications. The completed gabion mattress midline structure shall be within ± 3 inches of the midline elevations as staked. The surface alignment, including bulges, shall not vary more than 3 inches.

C. Geotextile

1. Placement: The geotextile shall be placed so as to form a filter membrane between soil and gabion mattress. The textile shall be set on previously prepared smooth ground free of obstructions, depressions, and debris. The cloth shall not be laid in a stretched condition but shall be laid loosely with the long dimension perpendicular to the channel centerline. The panels shall be overlapped a minimum of 12 inches.

2. Securing Staples: Shall be placed along a line approximately 2 inches in from the edge of the outer limits of the completed filter cloth area at intervals not greater than 6 feet unless otherwise shown on the drawings. Additional staples shall be installed as necessary to prevent slippage of the filter cloth, regardless of location. Each securing staple shall be inserted through the cloth until the washer or grommet bears against the cloth and secures it firmly to the foundation. Overlaps on vertical faces shall be staggered a minimum distance of 1500 mm (5 feet) between adjacent sheets or sections. The alternate style "U-shaped" staple shall not be used where it cannot be pushed into the ground its full length. If gabions are placed and staked immediately after filter fabric placement, fabric staples will not be needed.

D. Reno Mattress (Gabion) Placement and Alignment

1. Reno Mattresses (gabions) will be two tiered, staggered at the halfway point to the length of the mattresses of the previous row, running lengthwise across the dam, on top of the filter fabric. The gabions will be secured to one another with lacing wire and/or hog rings every six inches on the top edges of all contacting sides across the entire dam. Three rebar stakes will be driven at the top inside edge of each mattress and through the underlying filter fabric to secure all materials of the structure to the dam face. Placement of the stakes will be one stake 24 inches from each corner and one stake in the middle. Stakes will be driven in until only 3 inches remain above the ground. The two bottom end gabions will have two additional stakes put in on the baskets where there is no overlap to the baskets in the previous row to prevent sliding or movement.

E. Rock Filler Placement

1. Do not begin placing of rock filler until installation of the gabion baskets has been inspected and approved by the Project Inspector. Fill gabion baskets with the specified rock material; place rock filler carefully to avoid dislodging internal tie wires, creating voids, or causing bulging or crushing of the basket fabric. Rock shall not be dropped from a height greater than 2 feet. Rock filler will need to be arranged manually to minimize voids and settling. Once the fill has been accepted by the Project Inspector, Gabion lids will be able to be placed.

F. Reno Mattress (Gabion) Lids

1. Gabion Lids will be attached by wire lacing and/or hog rings as determined by the

Project Inspector dependent on how secure the mattress placement and fill has been assembled. Hog rings will be placed at 6 inch intervals across the top of the lid at every point where contact to the basket should be made around the whole of the perimeter and the inner divider(s).

PART 5: MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

5.1 BASIS OF PAYMENT

Payment: No direct payment for the work described under this section will be made.
