About this file

This is an equipment specification attachment for a federal procurement requiring a Four-Ball Wear and EP Test Instrument. The USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) seeks to acquire one specialized laboratory testing instrument capable of running standard ASTM test methods including D2266, D2596, D2783, D4172, and D5183, along with IP, DIN, and CEC protocols for evaluating biobased lubricants and greases.

The required instrument must feature a servo drive motor with belt drive operating from 5-3,600 RPM on both 50Hz and 60Hz power systems, a dual range load system switching between low range (0-50 kg, ±0.2 kg accuracy) and high range (0-800 kg, ±5 kg accuracy) with optional extension to 1,000 kg, and dynamic load control capabilities. Additional specifications include dual independent friction systems for enhanced measurement accuracy, integrated microscope system for comprehensive lab reporting with test data and ball scar photos, integrated wear sensor for automatic EP test protection, authentic ASTM Round Robin test cups, touchscreen interface with preloaded standard test protocols, and 30 Hz data collection rate. The instrument must be delivered to USDA ARS at 600 East Mermaid Lane, Lab #3123, Wyndmoor, PA 19038 within 14 weeks after contract award.

Attachment 1 – Specifications Four-Ball Wear and EP Test Instrument

Required Specifications

• Four-Ball Tester capable of running standard ASTM test methods, such as ASTM D2266, D2596, D2783, D4172, D5183; IP 239; IP 300; DIN 51350-1/2/4/6; CEC L-45-A-99 (KRL) to evaluate biobased lubricant and greases

• Four-Ball Tester capable of operating for extended periods (up to 500 hours) under heavy loads, such as modern KRL tests

• Servo Drive Motor with Belt Drive: Operates from 5 RPM to 3,600 RPM on both 50 Hz and 60 Hz power systems.

• Dual Range Load System: Seamlessly switches between a low range (0 to 50 kg, ±0.2 kg accuracy) and a high range (0 to 800 kg, ±5 kg accuracy), with an optional extension to 1,000 kg.

• Dynamic load control system

• Dual Independent Friction Systems: Enhances accuracy for both low friction measurements as required in Four-Ball Wear tests while giving accurate friction measurements for Four-ball EP tests.

• Compact Footprint: Saves valuable laboratory bench space.

• Integrated Microscope System: Enables a single lab report combining test data, data graphs, ball scar measurements, and ball scar photos.

• Integrated Wear Sensor: Automatically stops the EP test during extreme wear events (e.g., load arm drop) to protect the spindle and test cup.

• Authentic Test Cups: Instrument using the original and separate wear and EP cups from ASTM Round Robin Testing

• Integrated touchscreen user interface and operating software.

• Software supporting all standard ASTM, DIN, IP, and other test protocols with preloaded programs.

Software with predefined standard test protocol and flexibility for user-defined test customization options and to ramp and soak load, speed, and temperature multiple times during a test.

• Data collection rate of 30 Hz.
