About this file

This Requirements / Specification Document details a procurement for a Cryogenic Nanopositioner for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Communications Technology Laboratory. The document seeks a single electro-mechanical tip and tilt nano positioner designed to operate inside a dilution refrigerator at cryogenic temperatures as low as 30 mK. Key technical specifications include a tip/tilt range of at least 3 degrees, 2-axis operation, angular stability of 0.01 degrees or better, angular resolution of 0.005 degrees or better, and compatibility with 1/2" or 1" optical components. The device must have an external electrical control system with remote operation capabilities and be Python software controllable. Delivery will be to NIST-Boulder at 325 Broadway, with on-site inspection expected to take up to 15 business days. Electronic media including software and electronic manuals will be provided, and the base manufacturer warranty is acceptable.

Requirements / Specification Document

TITLE: Cryogenic Nanopositioner

Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:

Communications Technology Laboratory Radio Frequency Technology Division High-Speed Waveform Metrology (672.03)

General Statement of Need:

The product to be procured is a single electro-mechanical tip and tilt nano positioner that will operate inside of a dilution refrigerator at cryogenic temperatures. Remote operation must be facilitated by an external electrical system with software control. This will enable the Quantum Networking and Transduction project to fiber focus laser beams into the high finesse cavity of a prototype microwave optical quantum transducer operated inside of the dilution refrigerator. This capability will accelerate our ability to iterate on device designs and conduct experiments by simplifying our optical path.

Additionally, by launching light from inside of the cryostat, we reduce the transducers sensitivity to the vibration of the dilution refrigerator.

The primary technical requirements are that the nano positioner can carefully control the angle of a fiber collimator while operating inside of the dilution refrigerator at temperatures of 30 mK or less. This position requirement is because the focused laser light must enter the cavity at the correct angle to achieve mode match. The angle of the beam will drift as the dilution refrigerator cools down, so remote angle adjustment at the base temperature is critical for efficient transducer operation.
