SPECIFICATION

Drumfilter for Incoming Water to the Lumpfish hatchery

I. BACKGROUND

USDA/ARS/National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center (NCWMAC) in Franklin, ME and Orono, ME requires purchase of a drumfilter for use in a recirculating aquaculture system.

II. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Definitions:

1. gpm: Gallons per minute

2. TEFC: Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled

3. HP: Horsepower

4. UHMW PE: Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene

5. HDPE: High Density Polyethylene

6. PVC: Poly Vinyl Chloride

7. POM: Polyoxymethylene

8. EDPM: Ethylene-Propylene Diene Monomer (synthetic rubber)

9. VFD: Variable Frequency Drive

10. L: liters

Rotating drum microscreen filter requirements

1. Screen Media: Shall be furnished in panels. Shall have openings no larger than 10 microns. Panels shall be sealed to the drum structure continuously on all edges with a closed cell neoprene or EPDM gasket, attached to the drum with POM & UHMW anchoring assemblies. Individual panel removal shall be achievable without removal or disengagement of additional panels. The screen media shall be polyethylene monofilament fabric cast as an integral part of the hexagonal cell polypropylene grid support, uniformly supported by the panel structure. The Manufacturer shall supply patching plugs for repair such that a tear in a media panel may be repaired from the outside of the drum.

2. Drum Frame: Shall be watertight and constructed of HDPE, UHMW PE and POM. The end ring at the inlet side of the drum frame shall serve as the roller bearing track.

3. Filter Housing and Lid Material: Housing for microscreen filter shall be watertight, one-piece construction HDPE. Filter lid shall be HDPE, or suitable heavy-duty plastic. The filter housing is to support the drum on both ends.

4. Backwash Spray Header: Microscreen filter shall be furnished with one backwash spray header. The backwash spray header piping shall be furnished with a ball valve / tee assembly and necessary fittings to allow for flushing of the header and shall include a normally closed, powered open solenoid for automatic control of backwash water.

5. Backwash Pump: Provide components and installation capable of supplying pressurized backwash water at a flow rate of 14.5 gpm with a minimum pressure of 100 psi in intermittent or continuous duty.

6. Sludge Trough: Sludge trough shall be constructed of HDPE and supported on both ends with attachments to the external tank. Trough shall be sloped to the sludge outlet with a transition between the trough and outlet molded into the trough. Outlet sludge pipe must remain above normal operational water level at all times for ease of inspection & maintenance. Submerged designs are not acceptable.

7. Drum Gearmotor: Shall be designed for continuous duty, with TEFC motor, S3 factory coating, and controlled by a VFD.

8. Filter Housing Level Control: The Filter Housing shall also serve as a means of level control in the microscreen filter. The clean water flow from the microscreen filter is to be directed through a finger weir of preset height before passing out of the filter through a flanged connection. The weir level is to be set such that the minimum level in the microscreen filter meets the 65% submergence requirement. The Level Control may be of separate construction from the main Filter Housing, but should be integral to the microscreen filter.

9. Integral Overflow: The Filter Housing shall contain an integral overflow finger weir assembly in front of the Drum Frame, sized to handle the full-flow capacity of the process stream during an emergency overflow event. Partial capacity overflow weirs are not acceptable.

10. Must handle flow rates of approximately 50 L per minute

11. 460V/3PH power

Rotating drum microscreen filter controls and instrumentation

1. The microscreen filter shall be furnished by the Manufacturer with a Local Control Panel

(LCP) which houses all electrical components in a NEMA 4X enclosure.

2. The LCP shall be equipped with a three-way "Hand- Off -Auto" selector switch that simultaneously controls the backwash solenoid, the high-pressure backwash pump, and the drum drive motor. The microscreen filter operates according to the following logic:

3. "Hand" Setting: Operator selection of the "Hand" mode will result in continual rotation of the drum and backwashing of the screen panels via continual operation of the drum drive motor, the high-pressure backwash pump, and the opening of the backwash solenoid.

4. "Off" Setting: The "Off" mode does not allow the backwash solenoid to open, the high-pressure backwash pump to operate, or the drum drive motor to operate.

5. "Auto" Setting: Operator selection of the "Auto" mode will result in intermittent backwashing (drive motor operation) based upon an input signal sent to the local control panel from the inlet channel level sensor. Backwashing is to commence when the water level in the filter reaches a "high level" set point on the level sensor. In the "Auto" mode, the backwash solenoid shall be closed when the influent channel water level recedes to the normal 65% submergence level and when a preset time delay interval (operator adjustable from 2 to 60 seconds), expires.

a. Level Switches: Two level switches shall be supplied in the inlet channel to the microscreen filter and wired to the respective local control panel by the manufacturer. (1) for backwash initiation, (1) for emergency overflow alarming.

Level sensors shall be magnetic float switch type. Level sensor model shall be determined by the Manufacturer but shall be guaranteed for a minimum service of 3 years. Elevation of level sensor shall be field adjustable.

b. Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Controller: The VFD controller shall be housed in the LCP and is to control the drum drive motor to ramp-up the drum rotation from standing to full rotational speed upon initiation of drum rotation. The VFD will also ramp-down the drum rotation from full rotational speed to a stop upon cessation of the automatic backwash sequence or through manual "Hand" and "Off" signals from the local control panel. Minimum recommended ramp-up/ramp-down time is 5 seconds.

Nuts, bolts, washers, and hangers

1. Nuts, bolts, washers, and threaded rod shall be 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel or Titanium

Spare parts

1. Provide at a minimum, the following spare parts for the equipment:

2. One complete set of 10 µm microscreen panels for a single drum screen.

3. One spare EPDM lip seal.

4. One complete set of 5 backwash nozzle assemblies (nozzle, washer, & cap)

5. (20) filter screen patching plugs.
