TITLE: Spectroscopy IMS (Ultrasound Controller System)
Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:
Communications Technology Laboratory Radio Frequency Technology Division Radio Frequency Electronics Group (672.01)
General Statement of Need:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), CTL/RFT, in Boulder, CO has a project funded by the Innovations in Measurement Science Program to build an electric-acoustic spectrometer to measure intermolecular interactions. There is an urgent need for new strategies to develop selective separations for small batches of high-value pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, and catalysts, because the cost to develop a large-scale separation is too high. At the cutting edge of small-batch separations research, chemists control intermolecular interactions to improve the separation efficiency, yield, and purity of the target molecule.
The spectrometer works by applying both electric and acoustic waves to test a solution in a microfluidic channel (requires new acoustic-microwave capabilities). The key idea is that an electric signal probes the solution while an acoustic signal perturbs it, allowing us to measure a capacitance that oscillates at the acoustic frequency. The acoustic wave applies a local pressure that increases and decreases over a wavelength, changing the distribution of the ion pairs and their free energies and kinetics of formation. This change in kinetics provides selectivity since different ion-pair species require different amounts of time to form. The acoustic wave also changes the capacitance, because each ion-pair species has a different dipole moment and electrical relaxation time. We measure this time-dependent capacitance and convert it to linear and nonlinear dielectric constants (i.e., susceptibilities) to produce an electric-acoustic spectrum.
To this end, we require an ultrasound control system to provide broadband RF control for transmitting and receiving ultrasound signals and controlling the behavior of ultrasound transducer arrays. The dynamic nature of the testing requires the ultrasound to accept (slave) or transmit (master) trigger signals to facilitate timing of data collection among different electrical, acoustic and optical sensors. The information from these measurements will be utilized to develop constitutive equations and models of the fluid dynamic response and the intermolecular interactions in solution.
