About this file

This is a technical specifications document for a multi-purpose microscope required by the Pacific Shellfish Research Unit in Newport, Oregon. The microscope must feature hybrid upright and inverted configurations within a compact footprint of 18" W x 25" D with vertical clearance under 25" to accommodate existing laboratory spaces. The instrument must support brightfield and phase-contrast imaging with upgrade capability to fluorescence for harmful algal bloom and phytoplankton research. Key specifications include a magnification range of 1.25x to 100x, PLAN lenses for extended field of vision, and a color camera optimized for true-color brightfield imaging that operates independently without requiring a separate computer or display. The microscope will support research applications including shellfish development analysis, harmful algal bloom monitoring, and microbiology/pathology studies.

This requirement is being procured through Solicitation Number 1232SA26Q1078, a Request for Quotation (RFQ) issued by the Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service under FAR Part 12 for commercial items. Salient Characteristics and Specifications for a multi-purpose microscope for the Pacific Shellfish Research Unit in Newport, OR --2026

Description:

We are in need of a multipurpose and configurable (hybrid) microscope to be used for research on shellfish development, harmful algal blooms, and microbiology/pathology within the Pacific Shellfish Research Unit. The microscope should have both upright and inverted configurations to fit in our spaces: its bench footprint should not exceed 18” W x 25” D with a vertical clearance under 25”. The upright configuration is needed for looking at glass slides, oil immersion and histology, and the inverted configuration is needed for viewing live samples in fluid-filled containers or well plates. For our applications, at the minimum, the microscope and its objectives should work for both brightfield and phase-contrast and the microscope should have the capacity to be upgraded to fluorescence to work on harmful algae and other phytoplankton, central to our research. The microscope needs to be equipped with a camera and not need a separate computer or screen for imaging.

Specifications:

As noted in the description section of the purchase request, this microscope should have at least:

- Combined upright and inverted hybrid modes

- Brightfield and phase contrast with the capacity to upgrade to fluorescence

- A multi-purpose magnification range capability between 1.25× to 100×

- The microscope should support PLAN lenses (for wide-range field of vision)

- Should have a color camera included optimized for true-color Brightfield imaging.

These specifications along with the purchase request checklist for supplies required form summarizes the necessary requirements of the biosafety cabinet the Pacific Shellfish Research Unit needs.
