STATEMENT OF WORK (SOW)
1.0 TITLE
SAMHSA Youth Innovation Challenge.
2.0 BACKGROUND
In the Surgeon General’s Youth Mental Health Advisory, he stated “Elevate the voices of children, young people, and their families. Youth are experts on their own lives, so it is important to engage youth in community-based mental health efforts. Explore youth advisory councils and other ways to involve young people in all phases of programming, from ideation to implementation. Gather feedback to understand what is and isn’t working. Include youth and families directly in delivering services, for example by creating peer support programs.”
Representatives from youth led organizations have stated that youth don’t want to be tokenized, they want to be asked what they want. They explained that youth know more and have more answers than they are given credit for, and their voice is key to being successful in any behavioral health initiatives. In addition, there is a great deal of research supporting that there are factors that are known to be protective against youth substance use including positive attitudes toward school, parental monitoring, engagement in extracurricular activities, and social-emotional learning (Richter 2022). Mattering and connectedness are key and powerful concepts that are part of those protective factors. (Maine Resilience Building Network, 2022).
Mattering is the sense of being significant and valued by other people. People who believe they matter to others have a key protective resource that can buffer them from life stressors and challenges throughout their lives. (Flett, 2018).
