About this file
This is a Statement of Work dated 09-10-2026 for the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) to procure a portable focusing schlieren system on a firm fixed price contract.
The contractor must deliver one complete focusing schlieren apparatus with an integrated optical head in a self-contained, portable enclosure; one tripod or suitable mounting system fully compatible with the optical head; and one complete set of user manuals and operation instructions. The system shall employ an integrated internal physical grid element requiring no external digital display, screen, or secondary grid element to operate. It must feature self-alignment through inherent optical design to minimize manual operator procedures, resistance to facility vibrations for stable wind tunnel imaging, and adjustable field and relay lenses enabling variable field of view, depth of focus, and focal plane positioning. The system requires a fully integrated light source within the main optical enclosure and shall be usable with only retroreflective material placed opposite the flow field. The contractor must provide in-person installation, verification, and user training with all associated costs included in the proposal. The system shall be properly shipped to WPAFB, Ohio with all shipping costs and insurance included in the proposal using standard, approved packaging methods. Delivery of the complete system is due no later than three months after contract approval. The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal and proper use in accordance with the manual for one year after receipt. Payment is due upon satisfactory acceptance test.

Statement of Work, dated 09-10-2026
GENERAL
The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) requires a portable focusing schlieren system to conduct advanced flow diagnostics. Current schlieren systems at AFIT image across the entire width of the wind tunnel, which prevents the discernment of spanwise non-uniformities in the flow. A focusing schlieren system allows for imaging of a thin plane within the flow field, providing critical data that is not currently obtainable.
This specification is for a focusing schlieren system, delivered on a firm fixed price contract.
The complete, integrated system shall meet the following minimum requirements:
Optical Design: The system shall employ an integrated, internal physical grid element.
The design shall not require an external digital display, screen, or secondary grid element to operate.
Self-Alignment: The system shall be self-aligning through its inherent optical design, minimizing the need for complex manual alignment procedures by the operator.
Environmental Performance: The system shall be resistant to facility vibrations, ensuring stable and reliable imaging during wind tunnel operations.
Focusing and Adjustability: The optical head shall include adjustable field and relay lenses, enabling the operator to vary the field of view, depth of focus, and the position of the focal plane within the test section.
Light Source: The system shall contain a fully integrated light source within the main optical enclosure.
The system shall be usable with only a retroreflective material in place on the opposite side of the flow field.
The Contractor shall deliver the following items:
Focusing Schlieren Apparatus: One (1) complete optical head in a self-contained, portable enclosure.
Mounting System: One (1) tripod or other suitable mounting system, fully compatible with the optical head enclosure.
Documentation: One (1) complete set of user manuals and operation instructions for the system.
