| 2.0 | LOCATION: CFTEP Office, 8000 US Hwy 281, Brownsville, TX 78520 |
3.0 PROJECT BACKGROUND: CFTEP is charged with controlling the spread of the Cattle Fever Ticks (CFT) that can infect cattle with bovine babesiosis. This infection can have a negative impact on the cattle business and result in an infestation of local ranches. CFT are not exclusive to cattle. These ticks have also found suitable hosts in white-tailed deer and several exotic ungulates including nilgai antelope.
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Veterinary Services, Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program (CFTEP) employees monitor the southern border of Texas, capturing stray livestock and maintaining a Permanent Quarantine Zone (PQZ) for control of the cattle fever tick from Mexico. Employees routinely transport livestock to holding pens for diagnostic testing, dipping, owner contact, and transportation to auction markets if needed. The PQZ encompasses seven county offices and over 600 miles along the southern border of Texas.
