About this file
This is a salient characteristics document detailing requirements for a telescope and relay optic system to be procured by the Department of Air Force Space Command at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. The primary requirement is for a 16-inch aperture telescope with 200-inch focal length in a ruggedized RC (Ritchey-Chrétien) scope configuration. The document indicates that additional information can be obtained by contacting Kyle Welliver (805-606-2698) or Tevin Limon (805-605-9556), with an anticipated timeframe of February 2025.

SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
Feb 2025
Telescope 16” and Relay Optic
These characteristics will satisfy the requirement of needs for the requested equipment. For additional information, please contract Kyle Welliver 805-606-2698 / Tevin Limon 805-605-9556.
1) 16” aperture 200” focal length ruggedized RC scope.
a. be </= 150lbs fully built to spec. To me able to lift the scope into place with three personnel.
b. have appropriate mounting plate for direct mounting to P and K mount arms. Dimensions and or physical plate can be provided for reference.
c. have enhanced protected aluminum coating on the mirrored surfaces making it capable of performing well in both visible and IR spectrum. Primary use will be in the mid-wave IR spectrum. Need flexibility to be used in the visible spectrum as well. Request options on coatings with reflectivity expectations to be approved for final product.
d. To be a Ritchey Chretien telescope design.
e. Secondary mirror motion control for automatic thermal adjustment. Intent is to have an interface to create a setpoint for infinity focus on a star for calibration. Once set, the scope should hold inf focus as ambient temps change, due to thermal expansion/contraction. Mirror motion accuracy should be on the order of 1/40,000 of an inch. Internal to scope microcontroller (or similar) should hold settings once calibrated. IE does not need continual connection to a computer. General operation temperature range 40-120 deg F.
f. Carbon fiber main tube w/ Aluminum supports or equivalent strength material with an emphasis on weight reduction and resiliency to vibration.
g. Fully shrouded design. No open skeletal designs.
h. Provide fully enclosed and re-usable transport case with vibration isolation and non-pneumatic caster wheels.
i. 10th wave image quality, or better, at the image plane. To be verified via interferometric testing once received.
j. Provide user and maintenance manual to include recommended mirror removal, cleaning, and collimation procedures.
2) Relay optic
a. Relay optic specifically designed to go between a FLIR 8200 camera and line 1) telescope.
b. Relay should match cold stops and appropriately size optimal image patch of telescope to sensor of FLIR camera.
c. Intended frequency mid-wave IR (3-5 um).
