This is a Technical Specification & Requirements document for the procurement of a research-grade Compact Benchtop Mass Spectrometer (CMS) system with accessories.

The system must be a compact, benchtop single quadrupole mass spectrometer featuring dual ionization sources (ESI and APCI), manual flow injection valve, and direct injection capability. Core performance specifications include a mass-to-charge range of m/z 10 to 2,000, flow rate operation from 10 μL/min to 1,000 μL/min, polarity switching capability, scanning rates up to 10,000 m/z units/sec, and mass resolution of 0.5 to 0.7 m/z units FWHM at 1,000 m/z units/sec. The instrument must detect 100 picograms of reserpine with a 100:1 signal-to-noise ratio in full-scan mode and 10 picograms using Selected Ion Monitoring. Mass accuracy must be within ±0.1 m/z units with stability maintained over continuous 30-day operation periods. Physical dimensions cannot exceed 11 inches W × 22 inches D × 26 inches H to fit within standard laboratory fume hoods. Electrical requirements are standard North American 110V, 15Amp outlets with nitrogen gas consumption not exceeding 60 PSI.

The software suite must provide unified control of both the mass spectrometer and existing HPLC systems, automated background-subtraction peak detection, support for open-source frameworks, charge deconvolution utilities, and programmable analog outputs for up to four simultaneous chromatogram channels. The system must support up to 16 digital and analog I/O ports. Optional interface kits include Thin-Layer Chromatography plate readers, direct solids/liquids analysis probes, headspace and gas analyzers, continuous-flow sampling systems, and direct coupling to Flash Chromatography, Supercritical Fluid Chromatography, and Preparative HPLC systems. The complete procurement includes a rotary vane vacuum pump, diaphragm pump-based exhaust system, dedicated pre-configured workstation, minimum 12-month hardware and software warranty, and professional on-site installation with operator training.

1. General System Description The system must be a compact, benchtop single quadrupole mass spectrometer with a liquid introduction interface and manual flow injection valve, designed for rapid, real-time chemical and molecular analysis directly at a chemist's bench. The instrument must support versatile ionization techniques (ESI and APCI) and interface seamlessly with existing laboratory liquid chromatography infrastructure.

2. Core Instrument Specifications The instrument must meet or exceed the following core hardware and performance specifications:

Parameter Requirement Specification

Ion Sources Must include both Electrospray Ionization (ESI) and Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI) ion sources.

Sample Introduction Must have direct injection operation and include a manual, dual-position rotary liquid injection valve installed directly inside the spectrometer frame/chassis.

Mass Analyzer Must be a single quadrupole mass filter covering a mass-to-charge (m/z) range of at least m/z 10 to m/z 2,000.

Flow Rate Range Must operate reliably across a flow rate range of 10 μL/min to 1,000 μL/min.

Polarity Switching Must be capable of performing positive and negative ion analyses in a single analytical run.

Acquisition Rate Must support high-speed scanning up to 10,000 m/z units/sec, ensuring compatibility with UPLC and UHPLC systems.

Resolution Must resolve peaks at 0.5 to 0.7 m/z units (Full Width at Half Maximum – FWHM) at a scan speed of 1,000 m/z units/sec over the entire mass range.

System Sensitivity Must detect 100 pg of reserpine injected on-column with a minimum Signal-to- Noise (S/N) ratio of 100:1 (full-scan acquisition from m/z 100 to m/z 1,200).

Must detect 10 pg of reserpine injected on-column with a minimum S/N ratio of 100:1 using Selected Ion Monitoring (SIM) of m/z 609.28.

Mass Accuracy Must be within ± 0.1 m/z units over the entire acquisition range.

Mass Stability Must vary by no more than ± 0.1 m/z units over a continuous 30-day operating period.

Physical Dimensions Must be a compact benchtop unit designed to fit inside a standard laboratory fume hood, with physical dimensions no larger than 11 inches W x 22 inches D x 26 inches H.

Parameter Requirement Specification

Electrical Requirements Must operate from a standard North American 110V, 15Amp electrical outlet.

Nitrogen Gas Consumption Must require no more than 60 PSI of N2 gas pressure for full operation.

3. Control, Integration, and Data Processing Software The system software suite must provide comprehensive instrument control, advanced data processing, and flexible integration capabilities as detailed below:

• Multi-System Instrument Control: System must include software capable of controlling both the mass spectrometer and the existing High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) system from a single software interface.

• Background-Subtraction Peak Detection: Software must include an automated peak detection utility capable of filtering out chemical background noise to automatically identify small peaks without prior knowledge of the target m/z ratios.

• Cross-Vendor Software Integration: Must support integration with standard open-source or cross-vendor instrument control frameworks to facilitate third-party hardware integration.

• Deconvolution Utilities: Software must include both automated and manual charge deconvolution capabilities for interpreting multiply charged species.
