About this file
This is a Salient Characteristics document for a USAF Air Demonstration Squadron (USAFADS) procurement of custom HGU-55/P Thunderbird helmets. The USAFADS requires custom-manufactured helmets to support training and airshow operations, with helmets procured annually due to pilot turnover, operational wear, and life cycle replacement requirements. The helmets must be manufactured to precise USAFADS specifications, including custom-molded liners, integrated communication components, oxygen mask fittings, aerodynamic exterior shaping, and Thunderbird-specific paint and finishing. All helmets must be fully compatible with F-16C/D avionics, survival equipment, and current USAFADS communications configurations.
Standard supply channels cannot meet Thunderbird requirements because these are custom demonstration items not stocked through traditional Air Force Equipment (AFE) systems. The procurement specifies three helmet configurations with 10 units each: XT01H1-HHB2-F2LG-SCLB-RX HGU-55/E EEK Fiberglass Large-SCL Liner Large-Red, XT01H1-HHB2-F3XL-SCLB-RX HGU-55/E EEK Fiberglass X-Large-SCL Liner Large-Red, and XT01H1-HHB2-F1MD-SCLB-RX HGU-55/E EEK Fiberglass Medium-SCL Liner Large-Red. Aviator helmets and related technologies are controlled by US Export Administration Regulations (EAR) or US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), with strict prohibitions on export, re-export, transfer, sale, or disposition to non-US persons without required government licenses or written approvals from the appropriate Department of US Government agency.
